I'm guilty of not cleaning my computers as often as I should.

Ew, that's gross.

My favorites: the swamp computer, the trashbin computer, and the rodent computer.

I've discovered (through painfully puzzling experience) that cleaning out my main box every 18 months or so is mandatory. What happens is the CPU fan blows dust onto the chipset chip nearest the CPU, and it gets caught and collects on that chip's leads (which are very closely spaced). Once enough dust builds up it seems to conduct e/m or static and the system locks up unpredictably. Vacuum the dust away and all is well.

The worst are those belonging to (heavy) smokers. The stench is just breathtaking ...

Interesting, this is the first time I am hearing about this.
I have to clean my PC every 4 months because of the high dust content in the air here.

Same here, mandatory clean up every once in a while, I recently removed two additional FANs (front and rear), cause the temperatures are low anyway (Intel e6320 33C idle/ 43C load), so currently I have only a 90x90 FAN on CPU (rotates slowly) and a 120x120 fan in PSU (rotates even slower). The dust level is little smaller after removing additional FANs.

The best would propably be to have fanless system ...

Linux is not UNIX! Face it! It is not an insult. It is fact: GNU is a recursive acronym for “GNU's Not UNIX”.

Holy Jeebus do you know it man the smell is HORRIBLE ... mix that with rabbit/cat/dog hairs and one time even fiberglass fibers (it molded with the airflow into the case, quite hard to chip off).

Call me a neat freak (I LOVE clean things) but WOW i would have trouble breathing with all that crap flowing around, leave the mice and spiders out of this. And yes i would HATE to see some of those ppl's homes .... GAH!
