The Internet is a surveillance state
Read Bruce Shneier's opinion article at CNN.com

I pretty agree with every point that Bruce makes in the article.
The condition of the cyber-peasants vs. the surveillance state is bad...really bad. I'm hoping that it doesn't get much worse before it gets better. In the past year I've deleted or closed all social media accounts, ditched my cell phone service, and am in the process of switching every single service I can to one that is privacy respecting and accepts bitcoin. If I can find a practical way to cash checks I'll close my bank accounts and credit/debit cards too. All phone calls will arrive and leave via encrypted voip. All Internet traffic is in the process of being tunneled to a mix network on another continent. The smart meter is going back to the power company, and if I had more money and the geo-engineering sunlight blocking wasn't so bad I'd go all solar and disconnect from the grid. There are steps you can take, but you have to buck the trend and you'll be alone in many ways until others follow. |
