installing via FTP going away after 5.5-release
Posted today on misc@, Theo pronounced that installations using the FTP protocol will be going away after OpenBSD 5.5-release.
http://marc.info/?l=openbsd-misc&m=139579420802409&w=2 -current users will undoubtedly be seeing this change in the installation procedure first. Details as to when installation over FTP will be disabled are not yet available. Note that this announcement only affects using the FTP protocol to obtain filesets. Other methods/options will continue to exist. |

ftp is already disabled in the latest -current bsd.rd

Thanks ibara for the clarification!
I see now that FTP was disabled five days ago in the following check-in: http://marc.info/?l=openbsd-cvs&m=139534571210095&w=2 Long live HTTP! |

Usually I copy the installation file sets and the siteXX file on an USB stick or thumbdrive. See the rather old example here at
USB-mediazine® OpenBSD reinstall using 'bsd.rd' and USB memory stick

There are USB installer images now: minirootXX.fs and installXX.fs
Download, dd(1) to the USB stick of your choice, and away you go! This is probably better/faster for those who don't need a siteXX.tgz (which I imagine is probably most people here, if not most people in general). |

yes I find that these new *fs images save me $. I've decided to make another contribution to OpenBSD just because of this.
--on a side note-- Of course, using a *fs image is my way to easily dd the *fs onto a SD-card for my little Beaglebone Blacks --- love those machines; I look forward to when they support USB. |
