Default Firefox for OpenBSD 4.6 on SPARCstation 5

Greetings to all!

Has anyone successfully install Firefox on Sun SPARCstation5 running OpenBSD 4.6? Please let me know where I can get the correct file name.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I have about two years ago when it was released. I am mentioning this because OpenBSD 4.6 is unmaintained. The current release is 4.9. However 4.6 packages are still available. For example my favorite mirror:

http://obsd.cec.mtu.edu/pub/OpenBSD/...kages/sparc64/

The correct name of the file is

mozilla-firefox-3.0.11

I recall vividly that Firefox was almost unusable on Ultra 5. It was very sluggish and too bloated for that old machine.

If I was you I would upgrade to the latest release and try to run something like www/netsurf just for browsing. Notice that Netsurf unfortunately doesn't support Javascript so it is just a browser but unlike Dillo at least supports CSS. Netsurf from ports i slightly outdated being 2.6 (the stable release is 2.7). You can try to update the port yourself. New version fixes specifically some issues discovered on OpenBSD. if you need a full featured browser you will have to try something WebKit based like xxxterm.

Thank you so much Oko! I will heed your words of wisdom. Perhaps you can help me overcome another issue.

I tried to install OpenBSD 4.9 but for some reason when I run the command to "boot cdrom" as stated on the OBSD quick install it fails with " Boot device: /iommu/sbus/espdma@5,8400000/esp@5,8800000/sd@6,0:d File and args: The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.

When I loaded OBSD4.6 I used this same machine. Please let me know what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks again

If you have OpenBSD-4.6 installed, you can download bsd.rd for 4.9 (located on the mirrors at /pub/OpenBSD/4.9/`machine`/bsd.rd), boot that, and perform a fresh install from there.

Once again I would like to say Thank You.

I have decided to execute bsd.rd but before I do this I would like to get a copy of my pf.conf and copy it to my Windoz machine with WinSCP. I'm not able to do this because the permissions are -rw----------. I have figured out that I can apply a chmod 755 to this file and I can accomplish the task.

Question for my future reference:

What number do I use with chmod to restore the original file permissions? Is there a formula for this?

Regarding the booting of bsd.rd, I have download the file to my home directory. Please correct me if I'm wrong, am I correct in that I must run
this file from the root directory and overwriting the existing bsd.rd?

Again I would like to thank you and all that have contributed to my questions.

Kind Regards,

pf.conf syntax changed from 4.7 -> 4.8, so you might need to tweak that file.

Converting from rwx to oct is simple. There are three sets of letters in rwxrwxrwx...the first three letters are owner, the second three are group, and the last three are other (everyone else). The numbers are calculated as such:

r = 4
w = 2
x = 1

So if you want rw-------, you'd need 4+2+0 (x is unset) for owner, 0+0+0 for group, and 0+0+0 for other, giving you 600.

Likewise, if you wanted rwxr-xr-x, you'd need 4+2+1 for owner, 4+0+1 for group, and 4+0+1 for other, giving you 755.

Download bsd.rd and put it in / (overwrite bsd.rd there), then when you get the boot prompt, type in "boot bsd.rd" to start the installer.

Differences for between releases are described in the Upgrade Guides. The big changes to PF syntax occurred with 4.7.

Here are the applicable Upgrade Guides. You are not planning to upgrade, but you will still find them helpful for things like PF.

Ahh, that's right...it was the release of 4.7 that contained the changes, not 4.8. Thanks for pointing that out, jggimi.

Good Morning to All and Thank You.

I must confess, I jumped off the cliff without my parachute. I went ahead and attempted to install OBSD4.9 by overwriting the bsd.rd on the root directory. I was a happy camper until the install started to complain that the packages were not in the mirrors that I went to from the list published by OpenBSD.org site. I tried the different ftp sites to no avail.

I believe the install failed because it kept looking for a package named bsd.pm and Cerberus.bsd.tgz (Cerberus is the hostname) which were not on the sites. I exited the process hoping that I can install from the official 4.9 cd I purchased from the BSD site but it does not boot. Here is the error message:

Rebooting with command: cdrom
Boot device: /iommu/sbus/espdma@5,8400000/esp@5,88000000/sd@6,0:d File and arg:

Type help for more info
ok boot cdrom

The file just loaded does not appear to be executable. Why is that?

I have downloaded new images from the official site but I'm still not able to install this beast! Unfortunately, I can't fine my original 4.7 cd.

perhaps you or someone in the group can shed some light on this issues for me.

Again thank you all!

Stupid question, but you're using the correct disk for the sparc architecture, right? I would imagine trying to boot an amd64/i386 disk would give the same error message...

I think I may survive the fall, I was just able create another image and it's booting. I'll report if more trouble.

Thanks,

Yes sir!,

The install going but it's not finding the files it's looking for at ftp5.usa.openbsd.org.

Error retrieving file: 404 Not found
looked at ftp;//ftp5.usa.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/4.9/sparc and found no OpenBSD/sparc 4.9 sets.

The set names looked for were:

bsd
bsd.re
bsd.pm
base49.tgz
etc49.tgz
comp49.tgz
man49.tgz
game49.tgz
xbase49.tgz
xetc49.tgz
xshare49.tgz
xfont49.tgz
xserv49.tgz
site49.tgz
site49-Cerberus.tgz

this is the same error I received when I initiated the bsd.rd after overwriting the 4.7 file.
Please let me know what I'm am doing wrong.

Thanks

Well, I'm finally flying again. I decided to create a cd instead of going to the ftp site.

ftp5.usa.openbsd.org is/was having issues. It is/was my preferred mirror. (it appears to be back now, but late last week it was having troubles)

I switched to ftp3.usa.openbsd.org and everything is back on track for me.

Jonathon,

I think I figured out why the ftp install failed.

I was typing in ftp//ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/4.9/sparc and the install wizard would go to: ftp://ftp5.usa.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/4.9/sparc

I think I needed to type: ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/4.9/sparc/

Please advise.

Thanks again,

Ramon

Use the list of mirror sites by number, rather than typing things by hand. You've had multiple typos here, and, I suspect, while running the install script.

This works for me:

ftp://ftp5.usa.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/4.9/sparc/

or

ftp://ftp3.usa.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/4.9/sparc/

Are you typing in the entire url when it asks for hostname (you shouldn't be)?

When it asks for hostname, type in ftp5.usa.openbsd.org

When it asks for server directory type in pub/OpenBSD/4.9/sparc

That should work.

Blarg. I've run current for so long that I'd forgotten about the list. Yes, choose the server you want by number...it'll save you a lot of headache.
