Question log in to console and startx in os x

Yeah, how do I do this? I like to use bsd, but I like os x and don't want to create a dual partition. besides, darwin bsd is a hobby of mine. So, I "login" as >console, which drops me into a text based interface. Cool right? well I have X11.app, but when I do startx it tells me there was an error and I think it was errno 61, but I'll check. I also tried using macports to install xorg, and it gave me the same error when i used /opt/local/bin/startx , so the problem probably isn't in X11. I get a similar problem when I use links -g. any idea what's going on here?
