Can sound be networked over a VNC?
I'm curious about this. Even though both machines are beside each other, I'd like to hear the sound from the client. (That is from the OpenBSD P4 to the FreeBSD G3.)
If such can be done, then what steps do I need to take and which docs do I need to read? |

You should look into the networked music protocols. On first pass through the ports tree, you might consider the DAAP-compliant variants:

Ok, I have it installed. Look like the new name is firefly.
Is this going to cause any trouble? That is the new name and all, nothing else. |

Pulseaudio? No thanks. I have two laptops with fedora on them and pulse audio is both a memory and cpu hog.
NAS? Yeah. I'm looking for it in ports. Mt-daapd is installed, just need to configure it. |

I've not tried NAS nor networked sound, but for local sound, Pulse Audio leaves a bit to be desired IMHO. It's been a rather pesky affair on a Ubuntu system when mated with WINE.
NAS ought to be exactly what you're looking for though, from what I've read about it in the past.

http://www.ryanflannery.net/howtos/obsd_voicechat.php let alone playing little bit music over the network. Since it is redundant NAS has never been ported to OpenBSD. However an earlier tool called rplay http://openports.se/audio/rplay has been ported at the time aucat didn't have server capabilities. Somebody has actually wasted time porting PulseAudio to OpenBSD couple years ago just to discover that only OpenBSD developers have CVS privileges to OpenBSD ports tree. PulseAudio has never been committed to OpenBSD ports tree |
