Default upgrade failure: wd0 is not a valid root disk

For the last couple of days attempts to upgrade -current have failed when trying to mount the system, with the message: wd0 is not a valid root disk.

I tried 3 different versions of bsd.rd with the same result. I can't find anything about this message with Google. The system still starts normally if I don't try an upgrade. I haven't changed anything as far as I know. Very odd.

Forgot to say, this is amd64. On a different macheine (i386) there is no problem
