Default raw disk access on FreeBSD6 & 7

I am having problem getting write access to raw disk such as /dev/da0s1a. What i did is very simple:
fd = open("/dev/da0s1f", O_RDWR);
it always fails on bsd6 and bsd7, the errno is 1, which is Operation not permitted.

Does anybody has any idea what is going wrong?

Answer 2 questions (3 technically..):

1) Are you attempting to do this as root? or do you have read/write permissions for the device node?
2) What securelevel are you at? (>=2 prevent raw disk access..)
