firefox/thunderbird take very long time (~45s) to start
I've never had this problem before. Launching either firefox or thunderbird in KDE takes around 30-45s to load and there is no launch feedback. Other gtk apps load just fine, not to mention qt native apps launch in less than a second.
This problem didn't exist on my last machine and it's only been one week. Anyone have any insight into this problem? Edit/Delete Message |

You could run tcpdump on your NIC and see whether that shows in stalling DNS lookups for example.

thanks J65nko, I probably didn't make it clear that this is the startup time, not the page load time; once the app is up and running all is fine and dandy.

Try launching it from a terminal to see if there is any chatter about what is (possibly) going wrong. If that doesn't provide useful info, try the same thing again with truss(1).
--- If all else fails, a big hammer method that I've used with frequent success to "solve" firefox (and related app) problems: % mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla.bad

Firefox is a rather memory hungry application.
It could be that you system has to swap some processes to disk in order to satisfy the needs of firefox. But even then 45 seconds is rather long. You could compare the output of top and swapctl before launching firefox and after firefox has started. Do you see any major differences?
