# sysctl dev.pcm.0.polling=1

What is output of:
# pciconf -lv |grep -A 3 pcm

Yeah. I did that too. I tried mpg123 to play audio before starting X and I'm still getting a very low volume.

It's very frustrating to boot to Windows just to play videos/audio.

ok Carpetsmoker sorry
try to mpg123 -g 100 and check for sound level changed . I think this problem can solved by a pci sound crad .So if you choose the pci card , the onboard sound must disabled and check it again.

So now, where should I go next? BTW, the driver shows as Realtek AC97 under Windows XP.
