Default site performance is getting worse

When attempting to post for several days now, I log in, compose the post, attempt to preview, & get prompted to log in again. Consequently, I lose whatever was composed. I have also seen the overall site responsiveness degrade to a crawl.
  • Are a number of people having the same experience?
  • Are these all symptoms of running IIS underneath?

Yup, same symptoms here. Oddly, when the site crawls, it often only takes a few minutes and then things are back to normal.

I had something similar yesterday. On preview of a an composed answer,Firefox gave me the message that www.daemonforum.org could not be found.

A manual trace from the root name servers showed that one of the nameservers forums misbehaved
Code:

I'll agree responce times are clearly.. unreliable, but what do you mean the site is using IIS?

Netcraft claims this site is using Linux+Apache.. (The former being odd considering this is the home of the daemon )

A couple things I've noticed in the last two days:
  1. Yesterday evening (CDT) the OpenDNS nameservers were not able to resolve daemonforums.org.
  2. Requests to the forum (searching for new posts, posting responses) have been a little sluggish during the last half hour or so.

I've had this two but not often.. But then again the DNS servers my ISP uses can get a bit pissy a lot of times in their own right, so I rarely notice it.

Depending on your browser and the forum settings the session might not be staying put.

For example:

My desktop is generally set to remember every thing and hang on to cookies, etc. I almost never get that problem unless I've stepped away for a long time (cookies expired, session logged out, etc).

My laptop on the other hand, I generally have things set to 'this data will self destruct" when I close my browser. That keeps the cookies from hanging around in case my laptop gets stolen. I experience such issues more frequently from my laptop.

Even then forums (like most well behaved systems) will log out your session after a certain amount of time and cookies usually should have an expiration date/time. Some boards softwares allow the time out rate to be configured.

Ippimail is a good example, they are careful to nuke in active sessions to the webmail/forums quickly for the sake of people at internet cafes and public terminals.

I've had the sluggish performance/timeout problem as well. Most recently was yesterday around 1:00 to 1:30 PM, EDT.

Same for me. That timeout and logout problem is worse than IMHO spam and other crap on bsdforums. (well, maybe not spam but ...)

For clarity, navigation about the forum, and read (posts) performance is usually quite good. Nav. and read performance is in contrast to the posting and timeout related performance.

Is this something that a few paypal bucks, as donation, would help.

The problem seems to be that MySQL drops the connection on occasion ...

The logout problem is a bit weird, sorry if this is a stupid question, but you did tick the "Keep me logged in" checkbox...?

We do not need money. We need ideas. We would love to see where the problem is. We would love to have a wonderful suggestion for a server come out of no where (Hint, hint, wink, wink...)

Yes, DaemonForums does run Apache on Linux. It would indeed be nice if we could move to a *BSD server. Also on the software note is the fact that we are running versions of PHP and MySQL that barely meet the vBulletin requirements. It would be exceedingly nice to move to a 5+ version of both of those.

Is daemonforums.org hosted on a dedicated server?

I run my own bsd servers in virtual machines. We get over 12,000 page views per day, without performance issues and I only have 640K up speed. If you guys migrate over to a *bsd server, shout at me if you need help. My site is at www.dominicanstotheusa.com if you want to check out performance. We run Simplemachines forum and tinyportal on FreeBSD 6.2.

If I had more IP addresses I would donate a VM for you to run on, but I have to buy a block of 8.

Hello,

Yes, I have noticed that this site crawls at times. But, I have seen worse. And, as another thread points out - this forum is still in its teething stages, so a little patience may be needed.

I have learned from painful past experiences that if I have an important post that took me a while to type up and compile (especially if I notice some sluggish forum behavior beforehand), that it is in my sanity's best interest to copy the post elsewhere (say a simple text editor) just in case.

Wouldnt it be a better practice to Ctrl A; Ctrl C whenever you wanna post smt

Not quite sure about FX, but if you are Opera user, just go back, the message is still there

How do you think I get the post into a text editor.

The inclusion of a third party (i.e., text editor) is simply another protection against the possibility of the text in the clipboard memory being accidentally purged.

That would possibly work, but it cannot be guaranteed. Sometimes it won't let you go back or what is in the last page is not what you left.

It works for me 100%, the only situation Opera cant save you is you accidentally close Opera or it is forced to quit unexpectedly, then the next time you launch Opera, the message content is definitely gone
