Which driver are you using, radeon or radeonhd? Have you tried the other one as well to see if the problem persists?

Nothing comes to mind, unfortunately. Are you able to remotely access the machine when this happens?

Some possible debugging aids, assuming Ctrl-Alt-Backspace fails:
  1. Xorg.0.log
  2. Serial console
  3. misc@ archives

Thanks JG yeah i see this error
X:/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/radeonhd_drv.so: /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so : WARNING: symbol(AtomBiosRequestList) size mismatch, relink your program

I think the AtomBios is the bios for the card it blows me away i bet it is something i am looking over...

ok if anyone ever runs into this it is probably a bug I got it solved! i had to enable Option "UseAtomBios" "on" in my xorg.conf file after reading over the man page i was able to find that it could be enabled if all else fails. I guess it did have something to do with the bios on my ATI card either way i have it working i hope this can help someone else with an ATI HD card if they run into the same problem...now i can finally get some rest
