You might want to be more specific about what you mean by 'local port'.
To me at least, this means a port in the ports tree that is made by you but not committed to the wider ports infrastructure. --> In which case you should read the FreeBSD porters handbook as a starting point. From what you are saying, I would gather that you just want to keep your software up to date without huge downloads over dial up. You can't keep the system up to date without downloading newer versions of things, be it the source code to compile it (and depending apps/libs) or pre-compiled packages of everything. For building ports, you should be able to use 'make fetch-recursive' to fetch all the dist files needed for a port build -> check ports manual page. You should also check the documentation for utilities such as portupgrade, porteasy, portmaster, e.t.c. from ports. And see if any of them meet your criteria. If you are more specific someone here might actually be able to help.

well i mean local port is making a cd like a port that i can install to another computer.
here is my plan : i download port plus the distfiles and the dependencies too at my college then i want to bring that port in a cd or dvd to my house and then copy or install the software that i need through the cd/dvd can i do it? how? |
|
||||
the easiest way would probably be either:
to update the ports tree (via portsnap/csup) then fetch all the distfiles needed by your ports. Then burn the contents of /usr/ports to CD -- you may need to compress it in order for it to fit on disk, depending on what you need. So all you would have to do is mount the disk on the system you want to upgrade, extract the files and start compiling. or to recursively make (or fetch) packages of the desired ports on the system. Then burn those packages to DVD. Mount that DVD on the system you want to upgrade and use pkg_add to install them. unless mounting network shares is an option.

To use the wpi driver include this in your /boot/loader.conf
if_wpi_load="YES" if_wlan_load="YES" legal.intel_wpi.license_ack=1 Then in /etc/rc.conf ifconfig_wpi0="WPA DHCP" This is obviously if you are using WPA (which you must) Read man wpa_supplicant.conf in order to set WPA up and create an /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf file Enjoy your wireless network!! |

hi all,
i'm back with dmesg file. i just want to repeat my question. i use freebsd 7 release in acer aspire 5583nwxmi. 1. why when i told my laptop to shutdown -p now it's not poer off it's still on? 2. i do postinstallation config and my marvell yukom 88e8038 and intel pro set wireless abg is not detected by sysinstall ? should i use wpi from clearchain? should i use myk from marvell.com ? 3. what is the easiest way to upgrade port ? why? thanks alot for your patience asking my question |

hi guys, !
1. after a few tries, finally ask Pyun Hyong, the deveoper of msk. i send my dmesg and he said that i need to disable my acpi. msk driver is work now thanks. 2. i've tried portsnap too but i have not trying to make "local port" yet, because when i tried to build openoffice.org-3 i get error message : failed in /usr/ports/devel/lib-glio error code : 1 what is that mean ? how to solve this? this things happens when itried to install fvwm-crystal too. 3. is it ok not to activate acpi feature ? is this matter has a relation with acer bios that unsupported in freebsd yet? 4. oh yes how can i make my battery status on kde showed up ? so i can see it anytime? hey, guys, i just want to ask about freebsd 6.4 and freebsd 7:
1. after freebsd release freebsd 7 they release freebsd 6.4 ? what is this mean? 2. what is the different between freebsd 6.4 and 7.0 (practicall side) ? |
|
|||
1... already using 6.3? use 6.4 unless you want to go to version 7
... new to FreeBSD? use a v7 RELEASE or _7 (STABLE) probably 2.... 6.4 will be unsupported sooner than 7.0 AFAIK. Other differences...

difference between 6.x and 7.x: two different branches; google for freebsd release engineering.

well, i still don't get it, well, maybe slowly i'll understand ...
oh, hei, by the way i want to know what must i upgrade and what i mustn't ? |
|

Heh, there are still people with FreeBSD 4.x boxes running around :-)
In my humble opinion, if you don't know which to choose and the machine is for personal use, you should probably run the latest Release (e.g. 7.0-Release) and use freebsd-update to install updates as they come along; including going to new releases (e.g. 7.1-Release) later on, when they become avail. (I personally wait a few weeks~months) the best way I know to describe it -> Release is what makes it to the ISOs, Stable is a copy of Release, but it gets some new changes that *usually* don't break stuff, but didn't make it into release; both receive security updates and errata. Current is the bleeding edge of development, the latest code as of when you pulled it from the mirror, be it the best or the worst commit ever published. There is also a legacy production (6.4) and a production release (7.0), the most interesting changes will find their way into a production release, and a legacy release will change less often. Personally, my server runs OpenBSD releases, my laptop runs FreeBSD stable.

well i think i get it now, by the way; open bsd is not free isn't it ?
and people say open bsd is harder to use than freebsd is it true? and i heard about advance cryptographic ? is it better than sshd from freebsd ? |
