Default Solaris on A HP Pavillion a6230n

I have an hp Pavilion a6230n, which i would like to convert over to Solars10, however I am concerned that Solaris will not support the NVIDIA GeForce 6150 and Nforce Networking adapter.

To night alone i have reinstalled Solaris over twelve times and each of those times rebooting the machine mentioned above only to discover that the internet connection wouldn't work meaning that I couldn't register Solaris with Sun Microsystems (which requires a internet connection).

How do I fix this issue?

Assuming you have the ifconfig interface issues settled, the next usual culprit is

Code:
/etc/nsswitch.conf
...
passwd: files
group: files
 hosts: dns files
ipnodes: files
networks: files
protocols: files
rpc: files
ethers: files
netmasks: files
bootparams: files
publickey: files
...
Edit yours so that the "hosts" line to read per above; that is, include the "dns" entry. The default is "file" only.

If you have NOT solved the ifconfig issues ...

Code:
# ifconfig <if>0 plumb

is the usual needed first step (and is peculiar for people coming from *BSD), where <if> is your ethernet interface driver (e.g. bge0, fxp0, ...) Then your ifconfig fxp0 1.2.3.4 ... commands will take.

I have trued every thing you guys have suggested and still no connetion.
I think i may have to return to opensolaris because I know that works with my Nivdia MCP ethernet adapter .
I Should mention that I have A Linksys WRT54G, Which seemed to accept Opensolaris, ubuntu, Fedora , slackware and a plethora of other distrbutions including FreeBSD and PCBSD.

Well, you haven't posted any info ... ifconfig -a, for one, dmesg. Does ping by IP (anywhere) work, but ping by dns string does/does not?

Suggest you pony up some diagnostic info and maybe someone will then be able to see something.

Instead of reinstalling..
I know it takes a ***long*** time..

try running
Code:
sys-unconfig
This essentially lets you re-configure the name and all the
network settings..

I saw that you mentioned OpenSolaris..
If you machine works on OpenSolaris.. then I would probably stay with it..
Reason:
Solaris is free for downoad but support (IMHO) is rather sparse
if you don't have a SunSolve account (i.e paid account)

just my ramblings..
oh.. the tips the other posters were also very correct..

also check your dmesg to see if the nic was detected..

plumb.. what a funny concept..
hme = happy meal ethernet..

Exclamation

I have reinstalled opensolaris and decide to stick with Solaris after a rather bumpy encounter with Fedora 9 (sulfur)
