Recommendations for 6.1 compatible Hardware
I'm looking at upgrading my older Athlon64/DDR2/ATIHD2400 based system with a primary focus of an OpenBSD desktop. I don't game but I do utilize Stellarium which does need accelerated graphics. I'm mainly looking to get SATA III, USB 3.0, DDR3 1600, supported graphics and low heat/minimal fans.
I am looking for feedback on several factors: 1) Video - Options: A) Intel Haswell/Broadwell w/ Intel HD video B) Either Intel or AMD cpu w/ separate AMD fanless PCIe graphics card C) There is an AMD FM2 cpu with HD7540D video and it is presently on sale: My understanding is that this is the only currently supported AMD cpu+gpu. Comments on the above options? I have not needed to set up UEFI and understand that some UEFI bios are more friendly to OpenBSD than others. Any that should be specifically avoided? |

The third option you linked to looks like a good deal. I haven't personally tested it with OpenBSD, but that would be a cheap option that you could fit in a compact case and get good performance for the money.

One hurdle for the development of more recent AMD video drivers was clang(1).
After going ahead and buying the A4-5400 cpu/gpu the following commit was made: AMD64/i386 clang support. Last edited by shep; 2nd May 2017 at 07:37 PM. Reason: AMD54 -> AMD64 |

Some motherboards do not follow the UEFI specification correctly and will not boot $ESP/EFI/BOOT/BOOT{X64,IA32}.EFI, they instead load $ESP/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi — this is a Redmond-derived hack used to accommodate sub-standard UEFI implementations and has unfortunately been adopted by some motherboard vendors. More on this problem here: http://www.rodsbooks.com/efi-bootloa...rnative-naming From my experience on the Arch & Debian forums, I would say that ASUS are the worst transgressors but many motherboards seem to be afflicted. To get OpenBSD working on such a system, it may be necessary to copy /usr/mdec/BOOT{X64,IA32}.EFI to $ESP/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi Last edited by Head_on_a_Stick; 22nd April 2017 at 02:12 PM. Reason: Corrected path to .efi loader |

It took a little while for all the parts to arrive but the above mentioned system is happily running OpenBSD 6.1 amd64 with a GPT/EFI boot. The dmesg and glxinfo were posted in hardware https://daemonforums.org/showthread.php?p=61306.
