Default how to determine if kernel & userland are synchronized?

Quote:
pfctl and the kernel are in sync
Hi jgimmi!
could you please clearify the basis on which to judge them as being in sync or not ?
Thanks very much !

Hijacking split from its parent thread.

daemonfowl, how many times do we have to cover this subject? If you want to take discussion in a different direction from the original poster, start a new thread.

Now that this is in its own thread, the output that confirmed synchronicity has been lost, so I will take a moment and repeat it here, and highlight in red what I noticed:
Code:
 -r-xr-xr-x  1 root  bin  528664 Aug 17  2011 /sbin/pfctl
and
Code:
kern.version=OpenBSD 5.0 (GENERIC.MP) #63: Wed Aug 17 10:14:30 MDT 2011
    deraadt@amd64.openbsd.org:/usr/src/s...ile/GENERIC.MP
These are in sync because:
  1. The kernel and the userland binary were both built on the same day.
  2. The poster, kbeaucha, is a -release user, and there are only two releases per year. It would have been very obvious if there had been some sort of user error in upgrade -- the dates would have been at least 6 months apart.
I'd asked about synchronicity in the first place only because Googling had shown that, once upon a time, an implementation error by a user who was running a kernel and userland out of sync had produced the same error message. I wanted to confirm or rule this out in kbeaucha's case.

Thanks jgimmi !!
Ocicat, I apologize .. I was asking about that particular instance & how jgimmi deduced they were in sync.
new subject ===> new thread

... ad infinitum .. :-)

No. You don't get it.

The order of events should have been:
  1. "Wow, I'm curious about this point brought up in this thread!"
  2. "I'd like to ask for further clarification!"
  3. "But before I post, let me go back and re-read the original message in the thread!"
  4. "Wow, my question isn't related to what the original poster asked! If I posted to this thread, I'd be hijacking discussion!"
  5. So I'm going to do the right thing by starting a new thread! And to help clarify what I want to ask, I'm going to include a link to this thread so others can understand what I'm talking about!"
This is the conversation you should have had in your own mind before posting anything.
