Totally agree with you, Oko..
It's ironic how the industry is evolving (again) into vertically integrated solutions (from hardware, OS, and all the way up to in-house applications). It looks like a great backward voyage to the 1960-70's, with companies like IBM, UNIVAC, Control Data Corporation, General Electric, RCA, Honeywell.. and even DEC (i.e., the DEC from the '70s-'80s). |

(Open)Solaris is very different from both Linux and BSD, it has different uses and therefore different users (Although there is some overlapping of course), this is why it makes sense to keep supporting it.
The same applies to MySQL and Oracle DB.

If they don't keep Solaris alive, at least as a commercial product, what sense would there have been in buying up Sun? It's not like Sun Microsystems role in Java is the best acquisition you could ever make these days...
