Default request for testing suspend/resume

Kenneth Westerback on tech@ requests that -current users test all mice, trackpads, etc. to ensure that no regressions in functionality are/will be experienced with the diff attached to the following message:

http://marc.info/?l=openbsd-tech&m=128036658608323&w=2

The window for testing before OpenBSD 4.8's code freeze grows shorter, so ensuring diff's like this helps the community.

Do your part to get a gold star from Theo.

I've seen CVS check-in's for both.

He says pms/pmsi in the post, so does that cover all or almost all mice? I'm not sure exactly what pms and pmsi refer to here, but it looks like pms is the standard mouse and pmsi is one with a wheel.

From the pms(4) manpage:
Code:
This driver provides an interface to a PS/2 auxiliary port mice.
...
In translated mode, the pms driver also supports ``Intellimouse'' de-
vices, with the wheel acting as a third button.
Yes, I can understand why there may be some confusion, but the point of Ken's request, is to point out to users that if they are serious about maintaining the quality of OpenBSD as it completes the 4.8 beta cycle, test it. If abborent regressions have occurred, now is the time to identify & fix them. Otherwise, it will be six months before some users will be able to take advantage of any resolution found.

I noticed the patch went in within 36 hours of the announcement, so it must have been considered successful. And suspend/resume works beautifully -- beautifully -- on my Asus 1005HA netbook:
  • I can use the keyboard function key to suspend
  • X can be running and active -- the OS automatically switches to the console for the suspend, then the resume, then back to X display
  • mouse works great afterwords
  • the athn(4) wireless NIC resumes
  • IPSec SAs and Flows restart
Theo wrote the following message to tech@, today. It should have gone to misc@. I have redacted the openbsd.org to slow down spammers' web page scrapers:

Subject: laptop suspend tests & reports wanted

We are moving towards the 4.8 release.

A major feature of 4.8 will be ACPI-based suspend for i386/amd64 laptops.

It would be very nice if people could grab -current and put their laptops
through the paces, then send us a report to dmesg@ with

- a proper long subject (model of machine, what works, what does not)
- a proper looking dmesg
- PLEASE DO USE A MIME MAILER
- output of sysctl hw.sensors
- any additional information which you think is helpful

Thanks.

Theo talks about the progress made on ACPI resume:

http://marc.info/?l=openbsd-tech&m=128106745707385&w=2

For those that have helped test, please test again! If you haven't help test, you still have time!
