Default Installing 4.2 on PowerMac G4 533 MHz

Greetings,

Has anyone had any experience installing 4.2-release on a G4 *WITHOUT* using a Mac OS 9 partition? The documentation makes it sound like it can be done, and I have been able to walk through the entire installation procedure with no problems. However, when I then reboot and attempt to go into the new installation, I get the famous blinking question mark.

One possible explanation that I thought of is that I may have set the boot device incorrectly in OpenFirmware. At one point I installed and was running NetBSD 3.0 on this same machine with no problems, but I have since then lost my install notes. (In particular, the OF syntax for boot device/file can be tricky.)

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance,

grid17

Is your Mac a New World Mac or an Old World Mac? Old World Macs absolutely must have a Mac OS 9 partition to boot any OS other than Mac OS.

If yours is a New World Mac then you should be able to install BSD or Linux directly without any kludging.

My beige PowerMac G3 is an Old World Mac. I don't know about the PowerMac G4s.
