Default Forum update, restrictions on new users

Forum was updated, in addition some changes were made to combat spam:

New users are now first put in a group called ``New users'', which has several restrictions:
  • Unable to post links.
  • Unable to post any images.
  • Unable to use signatures.
  • Unable to edit posts.
  • No access to some features like social groups, albums, PM, email users, etc.

In addition messages are now scanned by a spamfilter (Typepad antispam).

These restrictions will be liften when a user has posted 5 posts OR has been registered for 5 days, which ever comes first.

We'll see how this works and add other measures if needed.

Another change is that http://daemonforums.org is now redirected to http://www.daemonforums.org.

Also, the ``Post thank you hack'' is disabled for now, when upgrading this plugin all the database data related to it was lost, I can restore it from a backup I took just before the forums were upgrade (Already have done so partially) but this is not quite done yet.

Oh, and [code] pages are now wider, for example see:
http://www.daemonforums.org/showthread.php?t=1588

They used to be fixed at 640px, which resulted many horizontal scrollbars, now there are almost none on a 17/19" screen or above.

Downside of this? IE6 compatibility is broken ... I believe the web is at a point where breaking IE6 compatibility is OK ... IE7 & IE8 & every other browser should work fine.

Could be, but I think you can upgrade to 6. Not that important, really; it was a throw-away.

IE4 shipped with Win98 (all versions). But a software update was available for IE5. As well as one for IE6.

We support all major browser, including (but not limited to) Opera, Firefox, Safari, IE7, IE8.

We do not support old coots with Windows 98.

I guess I won't ask about my Win 3.1 box. Or my MP/M 86 box.

I disabled the spam filter for now, four false positives and no spam filtered at all...

For new users private messaging is disabled since some spammers have been using that to spam. Note new users can still use the ``Contact Us'' link at the bottom to contact the Administration (i.e. me) by email.

In addition the rules to be promoted to the Registered user group have changed to:
(5 days registered AND 5 post) OR (30 days registered AND 1 post).

Also, users who have been registered for 300 days OR have more than 500 posts have a larger PM box, I did this manually for some people by request some time ago, figured I might as well make it automated...

New members can start new threads. "Spreading" posts about the forums as you describe is typically done by spammers. We aggressively eradicate anything that is not in keeping with the Forum rules & info, especially spam.

Am I a spammer? I don't think so. I just want to put a question.
And of course, I post 5 message because of a stupid role. the role requested this behavior.

I don't understand your question/issue. You should be able to start a new thread without problems even if you just registered. What is the issue you're having?

In any case, posting random nonsense is never the answer, a friendly PM to an Administrator might be though ...

vata, Denzelii was confused, you do not need to make 5 posts to open a new thread.

It is obvious that "u" have never posted on a forum where the amount of spam posted was measured in messages/minutes.

AFAIK, there are no restrictions on creating new topics... post a screenshot of the error you're seeing though so that it can be investigated.
