Default Your OpenBSD Hardware

I use this hardware for OpenBSD 4.2

CPU: AMD Athlone XP 2400
Mainboard : MSI KT4AV
VGA : ATI Radeon 7000
HDD: Maxtor 80GB
CD Writer : LiteON
RAM : 512MB DDR400

everything is good and I use OpenBSD 4.2 with Gnome .
but sound quality is so low
I will test it with another hardware but by OpenBSD 4.3

  • Sun Netra X1 - stock DNS and DHCP and firewall - OpenBSD/sparc64 4.2
  • Compaq D5S SFF - Apache web server + pure-ftpd - OpenBSD/i386 4.1 (upgrading to 4.3-STABLE next week)
  • Compaq D5S SFF - Testing/building - OpenBSD/i386 4.3-CURRENT
  • Powerbook G4 17" - Dev/play-area - OpenBSD/macppc 4.3-CURRENT
  • Mac Mini - Asterisk server for one Cisco 7960G - OpenBSD/macppc 4.2
  • Homebrew AMD64 - Fileserver - offline as still can't get any f-in RAID cards to work with the mobo + OpenBSD (tried both Areca and LSI MegaRAID). May have to run FreeBSD on this one =(
  • About six other ancient i386 boxes as backup, SILC and rsync etc, all running various home-brewed OpenBSD releases and very much on borrowed time...

I have a single OpenBSD machine at home,

hostname 'vectra'

Pentium III, 500Mhz on a katmai core.
384MB PC100 RAM
8GB PATA drive with /, swap, /usr, /home, /tmp, /var partitions.
80GB PATA drive with partitions mounted on /srv and /usr/local (plus freespace to spare).

She's currently running OpenBSD 4.1, since I've been waiting for OpenBSD 4.3 to be released (the libexpat thing) and plan on getting this taken care of when work permits since 4.3 was released 2008-05-01.

I believe it was originally an HP Vectra Vli 8 desktop. But she now functions as a file server, and occasionally other things in a pinch.

Thinkpad T60, Soekris 4801 and my server.
Server: 2x265 Opteron, 4GB, 750GB(RAID5)

Perhaps my server hardware is a 'bit' overpowered for my needs

Changing it to a quiet, low-powered VIA rack server as soon as it arrives.

Got a number of machines in the P2-450 Mhz to P4-3 Ghz...

... also, because I have a work requirement to use Vista or XP for my desktop, I installed 4.3 on Virtual-PC 2007. And yes, it runs like a champ.

i have a Soekris Net4801 as an all-in-one box (router, firewall, dsn server, proxies, ups monitor, ...) and a Shuttle XPC SB77G5 as a desktop box. i highly recommend both brands: they're sturdy, have quality components and are fully supported. i used to have a large dmz with boxes running OpenBSD, but since a few years i just use virtual machines (vmware now - switching to qemu soon and hopefully won't regret it)

many people seem to love virtualization

2x 3Com 3c905
A 2GB hard disk which I suspect is failing ...

Six machines in total two of which are running 4.3 current and four of them running 4.3 release. Unfortunately I do not have SUN's hardware at this moment as I sold year ago SUN 10 Ultra 2x450MHz with 3x12GB SCSI HDD, original monitor, keyboard and the mouse. OpenBSD didn't support SMP kernel on sparc64 back than which was the sole reason I sold it. I will never forgive that to myself.

Home made:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E2180
Mainboard : Asus P5L-VM 1394
RAM : 3 GB DDR667
HDD: 160GB
LightON: DVD+rw

Dell Optiplex P4
CPU: P4 1.8GHz
RAM: 512 168 pins DIMM memory 133
HDD: 3x12 GB
LightON: DVD+rw

IBM ThinkPad A20p
PIII 700MHz
RAM 256 MB
HDD 12GB

3 other PIII DeLL Dimensions with CPU speeds ranging from 700 MHz- 1.3 GHz, RAM 512 MB of 168 pins DIMM 133 each, used for different purposes and containing 1-4 smaller 6GB-12GB IDE HDD.

I've been using an AMD K6 class CPU with 256 M RAM with great success as my firewall since OpenBSD 3.0. It started out as a Windows 98 machine and I was planning to give it away due to it becoming obsolete when Windows 2000 came out. But thanks to OBSD, it has become the guardian of my network and it amazes me still for the uptime. The only issue it had throughout the years was a faulty nic card which was recently replaced. The power supply and everything else is original. The secret for longevity is the adequate cooling in the case. My Soyo board places the CPU at the bottom of the case and I run two fans front and back through it. Unbelievable!

My OpenBSD firewall died ... I replaced the disk, put in the power connector in the wrong way, the result was molten plastic, lots of smoke, and a broken machine.

But I had a AMD K6 300MHz machine lying around to replace it ... Upgraded to OpenBSD 4.3 while I was at it ...

OpenBSD 4.3 on a P3-433 128MB RAM 80GB HD just to play around and learn it

Tried to install it on my HP 530 laptop, but so far have had no luck.
