Today's snapshot is ahead of the release in the development process. It has features and fixes that are not in the version that will be released ~1 Nov., but release is the more conservative way to go; snapshots sometimes don't quite work for everybody, although this is rare.

If I were installing a gateway for money for someone who intended to use it to make money, I would install a release unless I *had* to have a feature that had not made the release cycle yet.

You asked this question, or a very similar question, in March. 5.0-release will become available and supported on or about 1 November. Development of 5.0-release completed in early August. Development of -current is now 2.5 months beyond 5.0-release.

FAQ 5.1 describes the development and release cycle. Please read it; you will find that section of the FAQ insightful.

Because production of the official CD set has to be planned & managed making sure that the sets are available on the release date, the OpenBSD project will tag in CVS the file versions used to build OpenBSD 5.0-release months in advance.

CVS tagging for OpenBSD 5.0-release took place mid-August:

Recent snapshots will have 2.5 months of check-ins past what constitutes 5.0-release.

This depends upon your expectations, skill set, & willingness to monitor project communications. A number of people run -current as desktops, & some even run it in production use. Yet by doing so, those running -current take on the responsibility of dealing with change & software freshly developed. This may include the need to compile ports since -current packages are not always synchronized with snapshots & library changes may require packages to be updated while in the middle of the development cycle. -current users should also regularly read the project's mailing lists to monitor whether recent issues require further action.

More information on what is expected of -current users can be found in Section 5.1 of the FAQ.
