Default TIOBE language index shows the rise of JavaScript

From http://h-online.com/-1470828

Quote:
The latest Programming Community Index, published by TIOBE Software shows a recent rise in the popularity of JavaScript. For the first time since the index was established, JavaScript has surpassed both Python and Perl in popularity. In contrast, Google's JavaScript contender Dart is at position 78 in the ranking. Similarly, Google's Go language also dropped out of the top 50.

Being ranked tenth out of fifty isn't so dire.

The original report ranks fifty languages. More focus is placed on the top twenty.

Lastly, don't consider the results of this survey as definitive. It is merely representative. Not all programmers were asked for their evaluation, so the results do not necessarily reflect reality. Having said that, one can take away the general trend of the marketplace. In particular, there isn't significant market demand for PL/I programmers anymore (although I endured PL/I while in school...).

I also do not understand why Logo is even mentioned, but hey, grade school kids can have their language of choice too.

as long as there is silicon there is unix and daemons .. C .. and Perl ..
Ocicat .. if you're asked to choose between perl & php .. which one would be your favorite (practically) ?

While there is overlap between both Perl & PHP in terms of the problem space they attempt to solve, PHP is more oriented to implementing Websites -- both at the front-end & back-end.

Perl is more general purpose, & was conceived to address a much larger problem space.
