Default FreeBSD 9.1 on iMac6,1

Hi!

I have iMac6,1 (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz, Nvidia GeForce 7600GT, audio built in...).
Is it possible to install FreeBSD 9.1, please? Is it possible FreeBSD would be the only OS or is it possible dual boot?

Thanks in advance.

To check if FreeBSD 9.1 works fine on the iMac, you can use the live CD:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/using-live-cd.html

The second part of your question I can only answer from logical thinking (no hands-on experience with MacOSX + other OS on the same HD, so you will assume all the risks): It should be posible to dual-boot Mac OS X and FreeBSD, just resize the Mac OS X partition, create FreeBSD slice, install FreeBSD in it, and instruct the FreeBSD loader to add Mac OS X to the menu...

I also have not put FreeBSD on an iMac but did look into installing linux/BSD into an iBook that was given to a friend with the hard drive removed (No it was not stolen - the owner had enough money to buy a newer iBook and pulled the hd to put into his new purchase). We thought about picking up a refurbished hard drive to generate a working laptop.

What I recall is that the Apple BIOS was configured in such a way that OS/X had to be installed and a chain loader could be added to boot a second operating system. I would advise you to search the Freebsd forums for dual booting with OS X and the internet. I think one tool you will need is called refit.

Thank you for the help.
I have still Mountain Lion but I miss FreeBSD more and more.
IMO the biggest problem will be the graphics card:
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 4850
Type: GPU
Bus: PCIe
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 512 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x944a
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-B9110C-425
EFI Driver Version: 01.00.383

On Mac works very good and on Linux Mint (live DVD) it works very good too. But as I know FreeBSD support for ATI graphics cards is not good (it is my experience too).
I will try with live FreeBSD or PCBSD.
