Question Installed OpenBSD 5.7.Need update help

Last night,I installed OpenBSD 5.7 on an old Emachines e627-5974 laptop.

Default install with X.

I followed some YouTube video last night and after correcting my PKG_Path statement managed to add Nano and add the export statement to the user .profile.

I didn't follow the rest of the video because I want Gnome3(I normally prefer KDE on any OS,BSD,or Linux, except Ubuntu....I now use only Windows 10 and FreeBSD,but, wanted give OpenBSD another try.)not XFCE,because for one thing,I see M:tier.org recmmends Gnome, and, secondly,I tried XFCE on FreeBSD once and had login problems(I it worked if I used srtartx;a bug, appparently.

So far,I have a basic X desktop,no sound and no wifi(I read Broadcom is not supported?)....

If I try : pkg_add gnome, gimp,or anything it says "...not found."

Do I have to type the full name?

How I do updates in OpenBSD?

On FreeBSD,it's just "freebsd-update fetch install" #security fixes,etc

"portsnap fetch update"

I added the PKG_PATH to my root .profile & then exported it from there so that it works all the time.

Then I use the root account to install software, you only need the package name.

Take a look here to see the names of software available - http://ports.su/

How did you correct your PKG_PATH? Where did you put it and what value did you set?

How are you then trying to install a new package?

Tim.

Hello, and welcome!

There are two ways to point pkg_add(1) to installable packages.
  1. From the pkg.conf(5) configuration file. The configuration file will be created automatically if you installed the filesets and kernels from the network. If you installed them from local media, then this file will not be created automatically.
  2. With a $PKG_PATH environment variable. If this variable is used, it will override installpath settings in the pkg.conf(5) file, if present.

That is specifically for upgrades to base and has nothing to do with ports/packages. The modern FreeBSD equivalent to pkg_add, pkg_delete, pgk_info, etc is pkg(8).

The definitive test is to look at the output of dmesg(8) as this will tell us what the installed kernel understands about the available hardware landscape. In fact, please post the complete output of dmesg(8) so we can discuss this from a common beginning point.

How I do updates?
  • If you are asking how to update the base installation, boot with a newer version of bsd.rd, have the newer filesets available (or download them through bsd.rd's support of HTTP...), & follow up with sysmerge(8).
  • If you are asking how to update installed packages, read about the -u & -U in the pkg_add(1) manpage.
Recognize that there are few, if any, updates to -release packages during the lifetime of -release. -stable may receive a few more package updates. For more information on the difference between OpenBSD's flavors (-release, -stable, & -current...), read Section 5.1 of the official FAQ.

As a newcomer, taking the time to read through the entire FAQ is a great idea. This is the single best source of information about official releases to be found on the Internet.

When discussing system updates, I was omitted mention of the project's Update Guide. This is necessary reading if you want to have a successful experience.

Due to context, I believe the word update in Itproman's first post meant, "Install applications I wish to have on this freshly installed OS."

And therefore, he was not referring to either Update or Upgrade as defined in FAQ 5.1.

This might be true, but it is a supposition on our part. I posted both avenues to be complete, as there will be future readers to this thread who may be wondering about system updates as well.

If ltproman has additional questions, he should clarify.

Update:

Yesterday:

discovered that even though I had edited /root/,profile and /home/richard/.profile and added "PKG_Path=ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/....(main OpenBSD ftp mirror),have to use export command each time I boot.

Added: gnome,firefox,and gimp

3 issues:
_______

1) PKG_PATH issue
2)no wifi
3)low sound: speakers test=no sound, sound effects and YouTube=low sound -good for at night! lol

My background: MSDOS 3.2....6.2,Win 2x,Win3x,OS/2 Warp 3,Win 9.x,Linux,Win 2k Pro and Server,Netware 5.x(Network Admin course),XP,more Linux,mostly Opensuse,Ubuntu,Win7,FreeBSD,PCBSD.I did try OpenBSD 5.3 briefy,but,now I'm back with 5.7 to really dig in and learn it!

I have edited my first message.

I was referring to how to update OpenBSD,as in security patches, like on FreeBSD.

PKG_PATH:

Environment variables need to be exported. The primary server is not recommended, and even though it has "ftp" in the name, HTTP protocol is preferable. Use something similar to:
Code:
export PKG_PATH=http://<your.nearest.mirror>/pub/OpenBSD/5.7/packages/amd64/
WiFi

Your dmesg shows:
Code:
Broadcom BCM4315" rev 0x01 at pci2 dev 0 function 0 not configured
The phrase, "not configured" is kernel-speak for, "This device is recognized but I don't have a driver for it." You won't have WiFi with this device. The bwi(4) driver supports other Broadcom BCM43xx devices, but not this one.

If you need WiFi, you'll have to choose a different WiFi NIC, such as a USB-attached dongle, or, you'll have to choose a different OS. There are many diferent WiFi drivers -- see $ apropos wireless.

Low volume on audio

You'll need to adjust the volume -- the default is usually 50% of max for typical audio hardware. See FAQ 13 regarding mixerctl(1).

One M:tier developer maintains Gnome in OpenBSD while another maintains Xfce4. I think the reason M:tier speaks of Gnome 3 is that they also support RHEL/Centos7 both of which use Gnome 3. Their support of Gnome 3 in OpenBSD allows them to supply a consistent user interface to their clients. I suspect that if M:tier looked at the specs of your eMachine, they would advise a lighter desktop like Xfce4

Xfce4 will run much better and there are no login problems from xdm if you follow this guide

There are a lot of unsupported Broadcom variants out there.

The simplest solution is get a supported USB dongle. There are numerous alternatives, but Edimax is one of the cheapest:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ilpage_o05_s00

You should also find these on eBay too.

Thanks.

I'll grab one.

I have a USB dongle on the back of my Android Media box, which I recognized from the photo and thought I'd try it,but, upon reboot got all kinds of "...divide" errors." lol

It's a no name one,so not suprising that OpenBSD didn't like it.

Took it out rebooted fine.

PKG_Path:

I had another look at this video which was recommended to me:

https://youtu.be/6qxponJ0huA

and I saw my first mistake. In .profile,I forgot to add "export" before "PKG_PATH."

Issue #1 -no PKG_PATH after reboot -solved
Issue #2 -no wifi -potentially solved.
Issue #3 -low sound -in progress.

I use this in a script I call vol & run it at the command line, ./vol 175
Code:
mixerctl outputs.master=$1,$1
Edit: It is also handy for muting sound, ./vol 0

For the record, the dongle I mentioned is referred to by the kernel as:
Code:
$ dmesg | grep urtwn
urtwn0 at uhub4 port 7 configuration 1 interface 0 "Realtek 802.11n WLAN Adapter" rev 2.00/2.00 addr 3
urtwn0 at uhub4 port 7 configuration 1 interface 0 "EDIMAX EW-7811Un" rev 2.00/2.00 addr 3
urtwn0: MAC/BB RTL8188CUS, RF 6052 1T1R, address 80:1f:02:d3:96:8d
$
Careful study of the various manpages found in the following command:

$ man -k wireless

..will provide exact information about what wireless devices are recognized by the OpenBSD kernel installed.

As for the errors mentioned when plugging in a dongle already in your possession, It would be helpful for you to post what was displayed. Not knowing what your experience has been with configuring wireless devices, I can think of at least two issues you might have encountered, but without seeing the errors experienced, I am only guessing.
