Default DVI output in X

I recently got a new video card (ATI Radeon HD 4350). It has VGA & DVI out. VGA works fine in both console and X.

Since my monitor supports HDMI, I decided to try connecting it with a DVI↔HDMI cable, disconnecting the VGA cable to make sure it wouldn’t get involved. When I start up the computer, the console shows up just fine. When I startx, though, I get a solid red screen with an error message: “Out of range.” (The message comes from the monitor, not X.)

Anyone know why this might happen? Do I need to set some X options (I’m running without an xorg.conf)?

To get an xorg.conf file, you could follow the procedure outlined in http://openbsd.org/faq/faq11.html#amd64i386

If you still have issues with the xorg.conf, post the xorg.conf and the
/var/log/Xorg.0.log so we can have a look at it.

Out of range messages on monitors means that the default video mode cannot be displayed. Use FAQ 11 along with the modeline setting guide and tools in http://www.x.org/wiki/FAQVideoModes

You should really not disable ACPI on newer systems, it's possible for things to overheat without proper power management.

If it doesn't work, you should file a bug report, along with an acpidump.

As for the monitor issues, manually configuring modelines is almost never necessary.. DDC information is sent over the wire, check your Xorg.0.log file.

The computer won’t boot with ACPI enabled. This was fixed very recently in -current, but I haven’t found the time to upgrade yet.

I should probably upgrade before trying anything else, although I doubt it would fix the DVI problem (but who can say?). I’ll get back to this.

Yeah, OpenBSD's radeon driver is sadly lagging behind a bit.. but it'll probably get updated eventually.

Updating the snapshot to get the ACPI fix is probably a good idea, I wouldn't put it off for too long.
