Chromium browser causes reboots
Hi there,
So, I've been playing around with OpenBSD recently, not trying to accomplish much, but have been able to cause OpenBSD to crash consistently, resulting in an immediate reboot. Using Chromium, I log into my netflix.com account, hover over a movie title (or the arrow to scroll through the selection), and OpenBSD reboots immediately. I know Netflix isn't going to work; I was just playing around. But now I'm curious. -This has been happening over several snapshot releases (beginning with 5.7). -Before anyone points this out, I just updated to the July 23rd snapshot yesterday, so my packages are indeed out of sync, but this happens when they're in sync too. I'll fix this, but I finally have a few min's to post this message. -This does not happen with Firefox using OpenBSD. -This does not happen with Chrome using Ubuntu (dual-booting this machine). Browser versions are different though between OpenBSD (43.0.2357.132) and Ubuntu (43.0.2357.134). -Chromium creates a core file, but I honestly don't know what to do with it. -I had increased the login.conf datasizes, but I just double checked Firefox, and it doesn't crash. -No custom X conf file. -I hadn't originally investigated the "composite sync not supported" error (see below), but I'll post this message now and continue to investigate this error (I see a mailing list msg from '13 related to this, but nothing that helps). I guess my questions are: -Can anybody else reproduce this? -Where should I go from here in terms of trying to track down the issue? If it happens on Netflix, could it happen elsewhere? Sorry if I missed anything else useful; trying to cram this in quickly. dmesg: Code:

I have questions. No answers, sorry.
If OpenBSD is crashing, (panic, etc.), it should drop into its debugger, ddb(4). That won't help much when you're using X, as you won't normally see it unless X exits before that happens. A reboot, however, indicates that the debugger is not being called. So my first question is what is the output of $ sysctl ddb.panic ? The default is 1, which means ddb would be enabled and the kernel should normally deploy ddb, if a panic occurs (and there's enough of the kernel remaining functioning to do so).My second question is why i386 on a Core 2 Duo? It's possible that whatever problem is occurring to cause this might not occur when using a 64-bit architecture. You would also be able to use more than 3GB of RAM if you have more memory availalbe. My third question relates to the GPU error message. It looks to me like a video driver problem, and perhaps the one discussed here: https://marc.info/?t=142590303200003&r=1&w=2 Have you had a chance to review this? |

The hung GPU problem is likely to be the most relevant. chromium is probably only the trigger. Ever since upstream intel drm driver switched to KMS and using the i915 driver for i8xx chips, quite a few years ago, these hung GPU problems have been ongoing for the older i8xx chips (there is probably no interest in fixing it). But did not know it affected the newer i9xx chips as well... I wonder if it's worth disabling inteldrm (via ukc), creating simple X configuration to specify the vesa driver and verify if that stops the reboots? If so then maybe there are some other xorg config which might help for intel driver, failing that - you might be stuck with vesa. inteldrm was ported from the Linux kernel 3.8, so it may be that this was fixed upstream - or not. I certainly wouldn't bet on it. //edit: Follow jggimi's advice first. Last edited by blackhole; 24th July 2015 at 08:24 PM. |

If it's video related and there's no developer interest in fixing it, well then, it is what it is. Once I reinstall Chromium and test it, we'll know. |

So....it appears that the instant rebooting and subsequent "black screen" issues have been fixed with what I'm guessing is this recent commit:
http://marc.info/?l=openbsd-cvs&m=145156694604635&w=2 Been running Chromium for a bit now making sure to try Youtube and Netflix (because both sites triggered the reboots), and so far so good, aside from choppiness and stuttering (on Youtube; not Netflix, obviously). Could still be early to say for sure, but the issues I was having were instant. I regularly upgraded snapshots to test and at some point throughout fall the reboots turned into the "black screens". I noticed that there were one or two reports with similar video cards posted to bugs@ but with no responses, so I didn't have high hopes, but alas! Still seeing this in dmesg: Code:
"Intel GM965 Video" rev 0x0c at pci0 dev 2 function 1 not configured I had considered throwing Dragonfly on here just to test since they seem to be moving pretty quickly lately, but there doesn't seem to be a need now. I'm just fartin' around anyways. Jon Last edited by jwhal; 4th January 2016 at 02:59 PM. Reason: typo |
