It improved the page rendering most places it was "broken", but some file or setting on this machine produced cursive script in part of the text on about a third of the pages. Had to revert to an earlier 11- version. I checked .Xdefaults, .font.conf etc and could not find anything to fix it, (I am totally uninformed about the finer points of font configurations); including "about:config" most of which was in that nearly-unreadable font.

They seem to have dropped the easy-1-click check-box for putting the tab bar above the address bar (at least, I couldn't find it) ... so had to revert to moving everything around by hand.

What do you mean? Right click on the tab bar -> Tab bar placement -> Top.

This is already the default by the way...

You're right, but unfortunately my post said the opposite of what I meant I wanted the tab bar under the address bar, opposite to the default and the same as on Seamonkey/Firefox.

Sorry about the confusion, my bad! Thanks for pointing it out.

Ah right. Didn't even know that was possible without rearranging the toolbar.

What do you mean by "cursive script"? Could you give examples of pages that suffer this problem?

Like everything else (bar some texts in Asian languages), it displays just fine here: http://img38.imageshack.us/i/operasrcshot.jpg/

That attachment should show the cursive script within the google searchbar. Coincidentally, during the rollback 11.50 >> 11.01, Menu >> Appearance and within fifteen minutes of trial and error, it is setup to better than it was before the "upgrade".

I've never seen such a thing. Are you sure you don't have this font in Xorg's path, ~/.fonts, Opera preferences, etc. and it's overriding the default font or the one you set, or you have a font problem and "something" "somewhere" is falling back to this particular font?

It seems I was mixed up even more. I reverted to an older opera version and couldn't find what I thought was missing (i.e., a single option to locate the tab bar relative to the address bar). Then I figured it must be Firefox that has this now. Sure enough there it was in Firefox 5.0, under View->Toolbars-Tabs On Top. I think they changed the default with 4.0 but provided this convenience.

Apologies for the further confusion, I obviously have too many browsers.

I've many font configuration files, but they seem specific to xterms, aterms, etc; Alll the opera preferences reference what appear to be only two non-cursive fonts; OTOH I did find a four-page thread at my.opera.com that I skimmed; I surmised (and could be mistaken) that some font IF installed at the install is used by opera from then
on and cannot be easily changed; (if I had time to figure out which font it was, I could probably revert it. OTOH it may not be a problem if opera is built from the
port which arrived in the tree today; I unfortunately do not have time for that
either on this machine. )

I find this hard to believe. Maybe it's simply something in your (user) configuration. Have you tried renaming ~/.opera, then running Opera and letting it recreate the profile?

Opera being proprietary software, it's very likely (I haven't checked) that the FreeBSD port just grabs the official archive file and extracts it as it is.

CyberJet, it is best to ask OpenBSD specific questions in the OpenBSD subforums. Those in the know do not always read general BSD-nonspecific threads.

To answer your question, the Makefile used in OpenBSD's ports tree states that Opera is available for the i386 platform only.

I surmised it as a possibility from the thread, which I did not read very carefully. OTOH it probably is a user-configured file somewhere, but I'd rather wait until I rebuild the port someday than spend time retesting or desinstalling fonts, etc.
As this install is customized to my liking, I'm reluctant to do revisit the font
problem until I happen to upgrade a whole lot of ports at a time (xorg downtime of
several days usually).

Absolutely not!!!

These days Opera doesn't run at all on OpenBSD to my knowledge (after the changes in Linux emulation). Linux emulation has never existed neither for Sparc nor for Sparc64. Theoretically just theoretically one could possibly run Sun binaries on Sparc64 via emulation. I am not sure if Sun emulation does exist for Sparc64 but there is a chance since it does exist for i386. Theoretically just theoretically you could then try to run Opera 10.00 which was the last release for Solaris. NetBSD hacker Macallan did manage to do just that many years ago on NetBSD.
