Default PowerMac G5

Greetings.
I recently found a PowerMac G5 collection dust at work... So I was thinking about upgrading the firewall a bit
I was woundering if anyone here has any experience with running openbsd on a G5?
How are you booting it? (as the sata controller doesn't have a obsd driver) Is it possible to boot it from a usb driver? I don't think network booting a firewall would be a good idea...

Thank you for your time.

There are two issues which need to be resolved:
  • OpenFirmware on your model needs to be able to boot from a USB device, & this is dependent upon the model & relative age of the firmware according to the ppc@ mailing list.
  • Secondly, whether anyone has been successful in booting from USB is murky, but below is a thread on this topic from last November:

General information about booting can be found in the installation notes:

ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/4....INSTALL.macppc

...but I would recommend subscribing to the ppc mailing list & asking there. Information on subscribing can be found at the following:

Thank you for your help.
Yeah subscribing to the ppc list and asking there would have been easier, but thank you all the same

You're certainly welcome to post here.

I suggest the mailing list because OpenBSD developers interested in the macppc port will see it there. There are no developers who regularly read these forums.
