Default Trouble with flac files playback on cmus.

Hello forum,it's been a while. :P
As i enjoy my OpenBSD life i try to use different things because it's fun.

Lately i've been testing cmus which i like very much(i like it's vi-style).The mp3 playback works great. No issues with that. But when it comes to flac files cmus just won't let me add them for playback.

Yet on the cmus website it says that there is flac support:

http://cmus.sourceforge.net/#features

I don't know if it helps ,but the same thing happens for mp3 blaster. On the other hand exaile has no problem playing both mp3's and flacs.

Any ideas?

Ahh forgat to mention: I'm on OpenBSD -current.

I have no experience with audio/cmus, but I currently use audio/xmms-flac with all FLAC files with no issues. You may want to correspond with cmus' maintainer.

Hello ocicat,

Isn't xmms a player with a graphical user interface?I want to use cmus 'cause is terminal based.(I'm using irssi so far and i intend to use rtorrent and have them all together with tmux.)

I'll wait to see if anyone experiences/experienced the same issue and if not ,i'll correspond with the maintainer.

Correct. XMMS is an X application.

cmus is obviously not playing anything. It is just an interface for various libraries and codeces that do actual work. The first thing I would do is check which library cmus uses to play flack files. Then try finding another program which uses the same library to play flack files. Install and test that other program. If the result is the same cmus interface is obviously not a culprit.

Since you are using current (snapshot maybe?) the things might be broken indeed by recent changes and even worse the port maintainer might be unaware of that. I would contact him and in the case of the lack of response I would shot an e-mail to ports@openbsd

Best,
Oko

P.S. I do not use flack files since for me mp3s are OK but I understand how important are for people who like loseless formats.

One of the least resource intensive audio players is the mpd backend coupled with a text base frontend.
MPD wiki
I run mine with ncmpc (ncurses based in an xterm) and it uses about 0.3% of my dual core athlon64.
MPD uses the gstreamer codecs which covers flac files.

Hello shep ,

I am aware of mpd and before trying cmus i tried both ncmpc and ncmpcpp but no matter what config file i used i was never able even to add! music to any of it!That's why i turned to cmus in the first place :/

Now that's embarassing :

I have not noticed that there were separated packs for flacs and wavs for cmus in the ports.I just had to pkg_add them and bingo.

On the other hand it was good because i learnt the existence of ldd while i was trying to figure out what was the problem. :P

Thanks everyone for your answers.
