My window manager of choice, x11/i3, uses the integrated status bar application x11/i3status. The latter will produce a temperature report that updates continuously, and will change from a normal white to a warning red when the sensor reaches a threshold I provision. I am using 5 second updates, and a threshold of 90 C.
