Yes, there is. But I'd rather discuss that in a separate thread. It's a dance we do with two tools in /usr/ports/infrastructure/bin: out-of-date(1) and dpb(1), the latter using the -R option.

For posterity, the problems I encountered seem to be due to failing hardware that was silently corrupting data. The entire system failed catastrophically a few days after my last post in this thread.
