Default SOLVED: apmd not suspending

I've got apmd enabled and configured on my laptop to suspend if the battery goes below 10 percent, but when the charge reaches that level, nothing happens.

Code:
~# grep apmd /etc/rc.conf.local
apmd_flags=-A -z 10

~# ps aux | grep apmd
root 69378 0.0 0.0 228 952 ?? Ss 9:16PM 0:00.01 /usr/sbin/apmd -A -z 10

~# apm
Battery state: CRITICAL, 7% remaining, 7 minutes life estimate
A/C adapter state: not connected
Performance adjustment mode: auto (1200 MHz)
`apm -z` works flawlessly, so I have no idea why apmd is failing to suspend the system. Anyone else run into this?

While I cannot help with this particular problem directly, I noticed that your T430 BIOS is out-of-date.
Code:
ios0: vendor LENOVO version "G7ET95WW (2.55 )" date 07/10/2013
bios0: LENOVO 23539LU
The current version appears to be 2.71.

HA, good catch! Who knows, maybe that will help.

If that doesn't solve the problem, consider posting an informal problem report to the misc@ mailing list. Thinkpads are very popular among developers, and about half of them follow that list.

Default SOLVED: by reading the fine manual

Code:
bios0: vendor LENOVO version "G7ETB1WW (2.71 )" date 04/10/2018
Much better.

The bios update by itself didn't resolve, but as always, a closer reading of the fine man page did. From apmd(8):

Code:
-t seconds
apmd periodically polls the APM driver for the current power
state. If the battery charge level changes substantially or the
external power status changes, the new status is logged. The
polling rate defaults to once per 10 minutes, but may be
specified using the -t command-line flag.
My battery is old enough that draining the last 10% takes less than 10 minutes, so the suspend was "rarely" being triggered. (Never, really.) Adding '-t 10' to my flags allowed it to suspend as expected. (It took more than 10 seconds after apm reported 10% to suspend -- maybe 30 seconds or so. But, it worked every time.)

So now I'll just have to play around with the percentages and polling intervals to get things where I like.
