Default Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5320

This walmart-grade laptop has an RTL8188CE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC. I tried FreeBSD-10.3/amd64 earlier today (primarily to explore the ZFS tech) but there's no driver for this NIC. There aren't even WinXP 64-bit drivers (from Realtek or Toshiba) for this NIC, so no FreeBSD NDIS driver could be built...

OpenBSD to the rescue. Some firmware (with the wired NIC set up and connected, a simple # fw_update -a after installation) was needed and it's running nicely. With some software configuration and tweaking, this tawdry hardware might begin to look like a sleek, elegant machine. Thanks OpenBSD!

It's a ten-year old laptop that I got from my girlfriend (after fixing it). Most things work quite well, except web browsers which are all slow as hell (all the usable ones, anyway), especially Firefox (which is a known problem, it seems).

Another thing that doesn't seem to work is suspending and resuming... Haven't looked too deeply into the source for that...

People keep talking about it and I trust them but I personally have not had bad experience. I use OpenBSD as my desktop at home, I run it on my laptop ThinkPad X201 (all amd 64 5.9 stable) and browsers (firefox-esr 38.7.1 and chromium Version 48.0.2564.116 (64-bit)) are as fast as the one I use on my work desktop running Springdale 7.2 (RHEL Princeton University clone). Apparently things should be much better for people like you after 6.0 release due to bunch of changes which are removing the parts of Big Giant Lock/ scheduler patches. Check tech@openbsd.

I don't use that but I think I have seen reports on misc@openbsd that this is broken on amd64 current at least (i386 works but I for one no longer personally use i386).

I posted this on misc@. It appears that it results from a modification made to prevent accidental waking from sleep if people are carrying a laptop and jolt it. I am using my Thinkpad Z61M as a desktop since my actual desktop broke and I found it useful to suspend the machine at night. But now it doesn't wake up after suspend, whether this is done by closing the lid or pressing Fn+F5.

I'm not optimistic that it will be fixed any time soon since apparently too few people are affected. See http://marc.info/?l=openbsd-bugs&m=145979568820455&w=2.

Jn the meantime I've inserted "machdep.lidsuspend=0" in /etc/systcl.conf so that I don' t find myself having to press the power button after absent-mindedly closing the lid.

Default Correction: {Open, Free}BSD both have problems on this laptop.

I installed CentOS-7 with the Mate desktop back onto the machine: stable functionality has been restored. The CentOS culture is a bit difficult to live with - I feel like a [non-paying] customer or maybe like a guest in a hotel (or a squatter) - the system doesn't feel like it's mine. I suspect that aspect of the culture is somewhat by design.

I have recently bought used Wifi card for my laptop. Intel Centrino 622ANHMW. I confirm OpenBSD can use this card as usable, practicable network interface.
Code:
# sysctl kern.version

Lenovo Ideapad 310, i3 6100.
Integrated wireless does not work, I use a tp link tlwn722n.
Track-pad with separate buttons for right and left mouse, works in cwm with out any need to configure.

Still very, very new to OpenBSD and running -stable marvelously on a HP ProBook 450G1 laptop (i7 4th gen proc. w/ 16GB RAM)
Everything works great out of the box. I disable the switchable graphics and stay with the Intel HD video, WiFi is smooth.
I run a herbstluftwm, everything else lives in the st (simple terminal) tmux and ssh.
Now thinking about it, I wish I had a beefy desktop or server grade hardware to run this OS

Have a good day all.

That's "beefier" than any system I have.

I just installed OpenBsd 6.00 to this HP Pavillion (entertainment pc)
OpenBox WM, and some of the XFCE utilities, it is really working good.
I had been using OpenBox for some time now, but on a VM, this is the first time
I have installed it on a Laptop, and managed to even get the wifi working,.... actually
it "just worked",... so I am happy about this.

Hello, and welcome!

If that HP Pavillion has more than 3GB of RAM you will be better off with the amd64 architecture rather than using i386. You would need to re-install, an "upgrade" to swap architectures is not supported.

Thanks,
It is just under, 3gb,...It seems to me like if I remember correctly, by accident I had downloded and tried to install a
amd64 version of a Debian version, and it would not boot.
Tomorrow, before I boot, I am going to look.
I suppose if I was going to re-install, better to do it soon, before I really get a lot of packages, and
files,.... I think I pretty much have all the packages I will be using or need installed. But new files, data, etc. accumulate,..and later it is more trouble to re-install.
any way thanks.

The processor reports in that dmesg the keyword "LONG" which indicates 64-bit support. Plus it reports it is a "Core 2 Duo," which is a major brand of 64-bit capable processors from Intel. That particular model of processor was launched in 2009, the same year as your BIOS. There may be more recent BIOS versions available from HP.

I can only conjecture for the reason Debian may have failed to boot, but it is possible that the boot failure could have been BIOS related.

Your right, I also found in the bios, it is the HP Pavilion dv3, and it actually "shipped" with
a 64 bit version of windows vista,..
When I bought it, about a year ago, it had windows vista,..but was real "sluggish" .
So any way, I installed debian 7, and it ran much better,....
Now with OpenBsd,
Code:
$ uname -p
i386
it is running really pretty nice,.....in any event, I am curious to see if there will be
a difference, so I am going to try the amd64 OpenBsd,..
Thanks

Default your OpenBSD laptop

I just purchased a lenovo Thinkpad (Tm) T430
Works well although I am not a power user.

You won't see any operational differences. But i386 has some limitations.
  • RAM address space, as noted above.
  • Fewer and smaller registers, which can impact some applications -- you'll note the number of packages available between the two architectures is a little different.
  • CPU capabilities, which vary by CPU model. Some newer features are available on a CPU in either 64-bit or 32-bit operating modes, on another CPU these may be be 64-bit only.

As with GarryR, you may want to consider amd64. The T430 was sold with "up to 16GB" of RAM, but as there are 2 SO-DIMM slots you are likely to have 4GB of RAM or more.

With my main computer, a MacBook 4,1 (early 2008) booting 6.0, I am finally returning to the fold! X11 works out of the box, (wlan won't, but that's fine), rest is to be determined.
