Default Trying NetBSD

I just wanted to say hi in here. I've been using Linux for the last 10 years and it's gotten too easy. So, I'm trying to feed that desire for a challenge and fun. I've been messing with FreeBSD (both through PC-BSD and straight FreeBSD), but now I want to play with NetBSD. I'm downloading the .iso right now.

I just wanted to find out if anyone had any advice. I'll be installing this on a Thinkpad T61 with Intel x3100 graphics and the Intel 3945 wireless. Looking forward to having fun with this. I'll try to remember to RTFM before posting too many stupid questions in here.

NetBSD is even more fun to setup then Slackware, hehe. You might also want to do a man wpi sometime, and email the Intel guy for good measure ;-)

Two places you should consider for finding NetBSD-specific information are the project's Website:The *BSD's tend to invest more time into the quality & completeness of their manpages, so a lot of information can be found there.

Good luck!

I've installed NetBSD on my ThinkPad T61 -- and it is all working (well, about 99%).

You'll might want to use 5.0 Beta if you want the most functionality out of it -- as there have been great improvements since 4.0, such as working Function keys, azalia (sound) driver (though this still isn't perfect), wireless compiled in, etc.

Here's a good newb question...where do I get it? I found something under NETBSD-daily but the boot.iso was only 6.2MB, I wasn't sure if that was right since the 4.0.1 iso was 241MB. Did I download the right thing?

EDIT - Disregard. I think I found the right one. I had gone under the i386 folder last time. I went under the iso folder, this time, and found it.

To build 5-beta, for which there are no iso's yet, read this guide:

http://www.netbsd.org/docs/updating.html

And note that for 5-beta the proper version is netbsd-5

Learn vi. You'll need it after install. You don't have to master it. Here's a page I used to get things done until I could install Nano.
