So this is the thread for info about working (or not) laptops with NetBSD.

I do not have any NetBSD running laptop so I will not share any info currently

I have a Sony VAIO VGN-S560P laptop which is 100% working since NetBSD 3.0. For those not familiar with the specs, it's about 3 years old, has a 1.86 Ghz Centrino processor, 1GB RAM, 100GB hard drive, NVIDIA semi-integrated graphics, B/G wireless.

In short, the machine runs like a dream, snappy and responsive. I dual boot with XP for games.

Sony Vaio PCG-GRZ530. P4 2.4 GHz. 512M RAM. NetBSD 5.0. It runs.
I have to compile programs in tty and not gui to prevent overworking and overheating. Stays on 24 to 49 hours before shutdown in tty mode and 4 to 8 hours in gui mode. Using WindowMaker and Xfce4 as desktops with kde and gnome applications. JIbbed live cd was used whenever had trouble with X. I'll enable Linux compat later.

@SPlissken

There is a patch to make the wireless working, see this page for more details: http://www.netbsd.org/ports/i386/netbook.html

This thread also: http://mail-index.netbsd.org/netbsd-...msg003585.html

Let us know if it works.

Well some guys in the thread in aforementioned link said it works for them on 5_STABLE/RC3, so I guess it should work. Concerning the patches, just look at them and you will get the picture, something like:
Code:
cd /usr/src/sys/net80211
patch </where/the/patch/is/ath-0.10.5.10-ieee80211.patch

cd /usr/src/sys/contrib/dev/ath
patch </where/the/patch/is/ath-0.10.5.10.patch
Also, in that thread it is being said it is recomended to also get the ppb-hotplug.patch for ppb(4) in order to be able to turn on/off the wifi card by using Fn-F2 on keyboard.

Well, I'm actually not sure if you could get away with only compiling those, but if you also apply the ppb-hotplug.patch you might actually build the kernel as well. It won't hurt anything for sure.
Code:
 ... apply patches ...
# cd /usr/src
# ./build.sh tools kernel=GENERIC
# mv /netbsd /netbsd.old
# mv /usr/src/sys/arch/`uname -m`/compile/obj/GENERIC/netbsd /netbsd
# shutdown -r now
Tell us if it works.

well , i had several problem when trying to patch ath-0.10.5.10.patch
And kernel does not compile

I had several time this message
The text leading up to this was:

And when trying to compile kernel i had link problem because usr/src was on external hard drive on fat file system because i have size issue on my 4Go SSD
ln: libintl.h: Operation not supported
configure: error: can not link libintl.h to /mnt/archos/usr/src/tools/binutils/../../gnu/dist/binutils/intl/libgettext.h

Sorry, my fault, it should be:
Code:
# cd /usr/src/sys
# patch < /path/ath-0.10.5.10.patch

It fails most likely because FAT file system doesn't support symlinks. You would need FFS for that.
But, maybe you could try something like this:
Code:
BSDSRCDIR=/mnt/archos/usr/src                # <- Put that entry in /etc/mk.conf

# build.sh -T /ffs_system/test/tools \
           -D /ffs_system/test/destdir \
           -R /ffs_system/test/release \
           -O /ffs_system/test/obj tools kernel=GENERIC
Of course you would need to create those directories before starting build.sh, and they have to reside on a FFS partition.
I'm not on a NetBSD system and cannot check this right now, so I cannot tell you if this works. Experiment with options and see if it helps.
