Angry thunar and no XFCE4 WM

Something that's annoying me for a long time; as a i3 wm and thunar file manager user in my OpenBSD 6.5 release and 6.6 current, I do not understand why when I use thunar in XFCE4 I can access SMB or SSH shares but I have no access (operation not supported, see the attached file) when I use it with i3 or another window manager, any idea?

Thanks,

I'm just guessing, but could it be possible that thunar relies on some component included in XFCE4 that the other window managers lack?

I am not sure, as a linux user too, I see that in Ubuntu linux it works perfectly in i3 and other wm like icewm too.

You have two options for further research, if you don't get a definitive answer here.

  1. Ask on the ports@ mailing list.
  2. Ask the port's maintainer, Landry Breuil. Landry's Email address can be obtained with $ pkg_info thunar.

rdikarlus, searching the web for the error message in your screenshot reveals some thunar issues when the gvfs backend is missing or not running. x11/gnome/gvfs is listed as a runtime dependency in the Makefile. So it should be installed. Cursory digging on ports@ reveals problems with gvfs when dbus is not running.

Might be worth a try to check that.

Seeing the hardness ins making thunar to work in a non xfce4 environment, what's a good alternative? I need to browse smb and ssh shares.

Thanks

What's difficult? I just installed and tested thunar successfully in the i3 window manager, no additional action on my part was needed. That is because dbus was already installed and provisioned for use with browsers and other GUI tools.
  • The dbus messagebus system service script was already running, having previously issued # rcctl enable messagebus after dbus was installed.
  • Per the dbus pkg-readme, I already had the user launch script provisioned in my .xinitrc file:
    Code:
    if [ -x /usr/local/bin/dbus-launch -a -z "${DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS}" ]; then
            eval `dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session`

If these are already mounted, you shouldn't have any problem accessing them with x11/xfe.
