Default How about desktop applications thread

Since we have a server app thread, why not a desktop app thread? There's tons of cool apps out there waiting to be discovered and used. I'd like to see this in one thread.

Applications such as Apache, MySQL, Postgres, etc. are sufficiently abstracted such that general administration can be discussed in a generic fashion. In general, desktop applications are more tightly integrated to what drivers an OS makes available, & trying to handle all these vagaries in one general category will result in a lot of stumbling.

Given the differences in what applications are available in each of the three major *BSD ports/package systems, note that each *BSD variant already has a subforum dedicated to this topic.

Lastly, having a category specific to applications found outside of the ports/package systems begs for questions on how porting is done. Although there are a few people here who are capable of getting into the details, porting is not a simple subject & each *BSD variant has different criteria for submissions to their ports/packages system. This is not a subject handled well in the forum context, & certainly a general subforum. Such discussions are better handled elsewhere.

We may in fact remove the "Server Applications" (and "X11") section in the future...

Yeah the Ports subforum is good enough for server and desktops apps. Keep up the good work. This site is looking better each day.
