Default Kernel freezes on boot after install (OpenBSD 5.0 release)

Hi All,
I have just installed OpenBSD 5.0 release onto a server machine and the kernel freezes on boot (see dmesg below) for both the bsd & bsd.mp kernels. The bsd.rd kernel boots perfectly fine.

While attempting some basic troubleshooting (i'm new to openbsd) I found that if the bios0 driver is disabled the kernel boots ok. I tried to re-enable the bios0 driver the and apply some of the flag settings mentioned in the man page but the kernel continued to freeze. I've also tried to disable the acpi driver however then a chain of other upstream drivers freeze including the isa driver.

I've captured the following dmesg output by redirecting the console output to a terminal. Please let me know if you need a verbose output?
Code:
>> OpenBSD/amd64 BOOT 3.17
boot> b

I've tried to search google, man pages and the openbsd faq pages for some keyworks like bios0 freeze etc but can't seem to find any more hints and i'm feeling a little stuck. There is nothing mentioned in the 5.0 to current change log about a bios driver issue but i'm willing to give it a try.

Is there anything else I could try first?

Thanks,
Grant

Three suggestions:
  • Search through the project mailing lists, preferrably misc@ for related error messages. This will be far more productive than blind searches through Google. Various mailing list archives are discussed at the following:

    http://www.openbsd.org/mail.html

On first pass, I did not see anything that stood out.
  • Secondly, I would recommend either installing or upgrading to -current. OpenBSD 5.0-release was tagged in CVS mid-August, so there have been 4+ months of development since 5.0-release was frozen. Information on upgrading can be found in Section 5.1 of the official FAQ, & the Following -current page.

If you do ultimately submit a bug report (via http://www.openbsd.org/report.html), the first thing the project developers will question is what behavior is seen on -current.
  • Lastly, you may also want to try installing the amd64 port.

Default Lodged Bug Report

Hi,
Thankyou for your quick response. I had a good look at the mailing lists and appreciated your link to OpenBSD 5.0 snapshots - I was under the false impression i'd have to compile from source and couldn't believe how simple it was to install the current release. Yet unfortunately the issue is still occuring and i've lodged a bug report via email. I will also attempt to install the i386 version of openbsd on the machine.

Thanks for your help and in the meantime if there are any more ideas please let me know.

Cheers,
Grant

There are many inconsistencies between ACPI implementations and this seems to be the problem, so try disabling ACPI:

1) Enter the User Kernel Configurator:

boot> boot -c

2) Disable ACPI:

UKC> disable acpi
UKC> exit

I have tried disabling acpi but the kernel then freezes at the mtrr driver instead.
