Default Problems with startx command

Hello, I just installed netbsd for the first time, ive never used any bsd system before. It boots up fine, i log in with the root username, and since i dont really know how to use the command line interface i try starting the gui with startx command. The screen goes blank for a sec and a little white square with purple dots in it appears in the top right corner with the rest of the screen being black. Ive left it like this for like an hour so it probably isnt just loading. Im hoping someone can help me with this issue, thanks in advance
