Post Opera drops support for Solaris

I know we have a few Solaris users here, just wanted to point out that Opera will no longer be available (..at least, newer versions).

From http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog...he-setting-sun
Quote:
In order to ensure a consistently high quality browser across our most popular desktop platforms we have reluctantly decided to drop support for Solaris. This will allow our UNIX development team to focus all of their attention on bringing Opera for Linux and FreeBSD up to final release quality, meaning that a 10.5x release for these platforms will happen as soon as feasibly possible.

Please be assured that we have no plans to drop support for either Linux or FreeBSD. These are the preferred UNIX-like environments of our development team and hence fully supporting a browser on these Operating Systems is more straightforward.

As always, the Desktop team will continue to consider adding support for further environments and/or processor architectures in the future.

'Great' ...

Really dark clouds seems to gather over OpenSolaris/Solaris recently.

At least VirtualBox seems to have good news:

Maybe they will reintroduce Opera on OpenSolaris 2010.x when it will arrive and they just wanted to drop support for oldschool x11 on Solaris.

I think this is not a good sign. (Opera is my preferred browser, yay)

I wonder if other people have started losing interest in OpenSolaris too?
(I certainly have :-P)

Opera has never worked properly on Solaris until 10.50 release. Their decision is quite logical bearing in mind that OpenSolaris is dead and that Solaris is not free any more. On the top of not being free Solaris 10 is already at the end of its life cycle and I am not aware that Oracle has announced release of Solaris 11.

@Oko

I would not say OpenSolaris is dead, they are finishing latest release base upon 134a build, propably under 2010.05 name currently (was meant to be 2010.02)

With the way Oracle has sounded towards FOSS, I think I agree with Oko. Not that would surprise anyone :-o.

At least older versions for solaris will still be avaliable for some time.

Unlike Internet Explorer for Solaris which was avaliable for about a week and then *completely* vanished.

Microsoft probably denys that it even existed LOL

Not true. Internet Explorer up to the version 5.1 was supporting Solaris and even AIX,
HP-Unix and I think Irix. That was important weapon during the so called browser wars in mid to late nineties when the market share of the Netscape was over 90%.
