Xorg problem
I have problem with xorg, with or without xorg.conf. After creating xorg.conf I add Depth and Modes in xorg.conf as indicated in FAQ. Because I use gnome in .xinitrc is exec gnome-session. When run startx I get only black screen. CTRL-ALT-Backspace don't work, only when try to restart computer on the black screen appears gnome window that the computer will shut down within 60s or i can click cancel. Also mouse on usb port Genius 100x don't work, only touch pad work.
What i can do now? Code:

What version of OpenBSD are you running: 4.9, 5.0 or 5.1current? Xorg configuration and the supported radeon cards have been evolving. What does dmesg reveal about the radeon card?
|
|
|||
On this computer is OpenBSD 5.0 stable, graphics card is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570.
From dmesg: Code:
vga1 at pci1 dev 0 function 0 "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500" rev 0x00 |
|
|||
Should be supported although there has been driver updates and some back and forth changes (radeon vs radeonhd) in 5.1 current.
Any clues in /var/log/Xorg.0.log? If you substitute Code:
radeonhd Code:
radeon Code:
Identifier "Card0" Driver "radeonhd" BusID "PCI:1:0:0" |
|
|||
Nothing, the same problem. In /var/log/Xorg.0.log i don't find any error or somethink unusual.
Code:
(II) LoadModule: "radeon" (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so (II) Module radeon: vendor="X.Org Foundation" compiled for 1.9.5, module version = 6.12.2 Module class: X.Org Video Driver ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 8.0 (II) RADEON: Driver for ATI Radeon chipsets: I will wate 5.1 and then I'll try. Hi Marconi !
I remember I had once an isssue like this so I dropped using startx script and just did : xinit /usr/local/bin/gnome-session it worked fine .. as for gnome on openbsd-current .. I upgraded two days ago , and installed gnome* , but for some reason I received a dialog box reading : Code:
gnome : can't publish discovery information on the network kde is working fine though .. you can try your way .. |

This probably needs a new thread
Code:
gnome : can't publish discovery information on the network Code:
cat /etc/rc.conf.local ntpd_flags="-s" # enabled during install xdm_flags= # enabled during install lpd_flags="" # Start print daemon pkg_scripts="dbus_daemon avahi_daemon mpd" Last edited by shep; 8th April 2012 at 05:59 PM. Reason: suggest a new thread |

If an incorrect .xinitrc/.xsession was the problem it suggests you took some short cuts. When I am trying OBSD on new hardware I use the default settings (fvwm, xclock,xterm) first to see if X works at all. Having posted this would focused attention on the /etc/rc.conf.local, /home/user/.xinitrc or /home/user/.xsession scripts rather than your xorg configuration.

Thanks shep ! I wasn't hijacking the thread.I just wanted to let Marconi a gnome-related note to consider
Marconi .. you don't have to have xdm/gdm or rc.conf.local line(s) for gnome to start. I just use : xinit /usr/local/bin/gnome-session likewise , kdm is not a necessity .. it's a beautifier login screen .. xinit /usr/local/bin/startkde would work .. |
