Default I need suggestion for a web server

I'm in the process to build some service:
emails
web sites
blogs
mailing-lists
revision control (git/hg/cvs)
microblogging
console access

is a non-profit project offered on a friend-to-friend basis but now I don't know how many people can/need use this service.

I need some suggestion about the hardware requirements: disk space, RAM, CPU cores, bandwidth.
What is the best way? VPS or colocation?

thank you

fstef

It'd be nice if you had a rough idea of the number of users. 10? 100? 1000? But, you can start small and always upgrade to a larger server later.

I don't use VPS, but it's cheap, easy to upgrade the hardware, and you get console access. I went with a dedicated server which you can get for close to the price of a VPS. I chose dedicated over VPS purely for the reason that I didn't want other people's code running on the same hardware as mine. It's excessive paranoia. I can get temporary console access by request but it's not permanent or secure. It also gave me the option for more hard drive space (they are spinning disks, not SSDs) because I wanted to use the server for remote backups of my home systems.

Since my server is for personal use, it's hard to recommend hardware for your needs.

Tim.

I will use an analogy. It's a little as if the question was, "I am thinking of transporting things from here to there. How many axles will I need?"

Continuing that analogy, until you learn what distances you would be travelling, how much stuff you need to transport, how quickly, and where the end points are, no one will be able to tell you if you need a bicycle, a taxi, a large lorry, a container ship, or a jumbo jet.

Agreed. Choose an option that gives you maximum flexibility to upgrade if you cannot size any of these applications until deployed and in use.
