Hello, and welcome back.

Based on the limited information you've posted, I can only take a wild guess: H.264 support requires a manual installation of the gstreamer libav package. See /usr/local/share/doc/pkg-readmes/firefox*

If that's not applicable, then more information about the problem would likely be helpful.

You have not provided enough information for me to tell you why.

I don't think so, but then, with the lack of detail provided, you might be missing something needed.

People often complain about Firefox performance ... on every OS. You have not provided enough detail for me to be able to tell you anything more .... except possibly this:

Possibly ... you may be reaching resource limits. Firefox is a large, complex application with many dependencies, and it consumes lots of resources. If your Firefox user is using the default login class, change the userid's class to staff, or perhaps to the daemon class. This is an easy way to increase limits. See login.conf(5), and the discussion of ulimit in ksh(1).

As with my advice in my first reply, this is just a guess, because I don't know anything about your OpenBSD platform, nor do I know anything about the videos you are trying to use with Firefox on that platform.

All that I can learn from this is that you are most likely using the amd64 architecture. You may not be; i386 will boot on that platform, though it will not be able to exploit the RAM.

Ok i have installed openbsd, and then mpd, ncmpcpp, nano and firefox more not, and the gstreamer plugin. I have all at default vwm no desktop environment.

Yes i have installed the amd64bit version.

Videos i choose are star wars 7 and the hobbit the battle of the five armies 4k

Ps:how can i see what class uses my default user? And where can i change the class?

As i read your post should i install openbsd normal not amd64?

And thank you for your patient

Please post your dmesg. It is unknown what version / flavor of OpenBSD you are using. You posted a dmesg here in May of 2013, of 5.3-release. You should have the skills to do so again.
Looking at that May 2013 dmesg, I can see it was the uniprocessor kernel, GENERIC, rather than the multiprocessor kernel, GENERIC.MP.

You were only using one core of your i5 CPU. If you are still using GENERIC, this could be why you have a performance problem.

Please post a URL of a failing 4K video. Forum members here will be unable to duplicate your problem without one. (It won't be me, I don't have a powerful enough GPU or large enough monitor to attempt to duplicate your problem.)

If you are using youtube.com, you might be able to successfully obtain these videos without Firefox: You could perhaps use the youtube-dl package to download and then display with a video player such as mplayer.

---

Unless you specify a login class when you create a new user, it will be given the default class. Your /etc/login.conf file describes the classes that have been pre-defined: default, staff, and daemon.

Thank you for the detailed report!

I'm glad to see you are using both cores, with GENERIC.MP. Note that with hyperthreading, OpenBSD treats your dual-core CPU as if it has four cores. You may possibly discover you get improved performance if you disable hyperthreading in your BIOS.

According to this conversation on OpenBSD's misc@ mailing list, that GTK error occurred because your user is out of virtual memory. Common, with Firefox and other browsers.

As I recommended earlier, try changing your user's class from default to staff or daemon. The easiest way to test this is to try using Firefox as root -- your root userid uses the daemon class.

If Firefox works with this video while logged in as root, then, while still root use chpass(1) to change your standard user's class to daemon, too.

so hello

i run as root firefox and the same happens after 20 sec firefox crashes.

then i disabled hyperthreading and i try it again with root and with my user and now the videos runs not fluently very slow they stocks and run again :-(

so when i see /etc/login.conf <----- is this for the root user?
where can i find the login.conf for my user? and where exactly to change the default class?

edit:
i installed chrome and there i can choose the higher resolutions 1080p and higher but there also not runs fluently it stocks stops and run again.

and i can chrome only start as user

i get this messages

Code:
$ chrome
ATTENTION: default value of option force_s3tc_enable overridden by environment.

should i enable hyperthreading again? and why can i choose on chrome the higher resolutions?

Then changing your class will not help with this particular problem, though it may help prevent other issues with Firefox.

Then based on your test, hyperthreading provides you with better performance.

No, it defines the classes for all users. If you look through the file, you will see the daemon, staff, and default class definitions. From the login.conf(5) man page:
Quote:
The login.conf file describes the various attributes of login classes. A login class determines what styles of authentication are available as well as session resource limits and environment setup. While designed primarily for the login(1) program, it is also used by other programs, such as ftpd(8), to determine what means of authentication are available. It is also used by programs which need to set up a user environment.
Each user has their class assigned in /etc/master.password, see master.passwd(5).As I mentioned above, the root user can change a user's class with the chpass(1) command. Only the superuser, root, can change a user's resource class.

Both Chrome and Firefox are large, complex applications that have many dependencies. The failure you have with Firefox is with one of its dependencies, GTK; not with Firefox itself.

I can't tell. I don't have hardware capable of displaying 4K video, so I am unable to replicate/research your problem with my equipment.

Above, I suggested installing the youtube-dl package. You may be able to use it to obtain 4K video samples from youtube, and then test them with the mplayer video player you already have installed. If that test is successful, then you will know your "slow/blocked" video performance is related to browser, rather than your X configuration.

...did you mean this bolded?
Yes. However, I see something in that fragment which is not a best practice: You are using the root:wheel UID/GID with your "appro" user. Best practice is to ensure your normal userids are normal users, and to use sudo(8) or su(1) when superuser authority is needed.
Code:
# cat /etc/master.passwd
root:$0:0:daemon:0:0:Charlie &:/root:/bin/ksh
appro:$000:staff:0:0:appro:/home/appro:/bin/ksh

With chpass(1). I keep recommending the tool for a reason

You'll also need to use chown(8) after changing the user's GID/UID, to change ownership of its directories and files.

---

Generally, UIDs for "normal" users we control have a UID of 1000 or above. UIDs below 500 are generally for built-in users, UIDs from 500-999 for third party applications (packages).

You can assign users to any of the pre-defined GIDs, such as 10 - "users", or to groups you define at or above 1000. GID numbers to names are defined in the file /etc/groups, as described in the groups(5) man page. You can also assign a single user to multiple GIDs, by adding the userid to /etc/groups. FAQ 10.9 shows how to add a user, and lists all of the tools for user and group management. (For adding a user to multiple groups, I prefer to edit /etc/group manually.)

Now your "appro" user has GID =1000 and UID = 1000.

To modify group memberships, such as adding a user to the wheel group (GID = 0), I find it easiest to edit /etc/group directly.

Change this:
Code:
wheel:*:0:root
to this:
Code:
wheel:*:0:root,appro
To permit users in the wheel group to have full root authority, select one of these two lines to uncomment in your sudoers(5) file.
Code:
# Uncomment to allow people in group wheel to run all commands
# and set environment variables.
# %wheel ALL=(ALL) SETENV: ALL

# Same thing without a password
# %wheel ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: SETENV: ALL

The window manager you choose is likely to have little impact on video playback performance. That is most likely to be affected by X Windows configuration.

Did you test video with mplayer? If so, did you have the same results??

Since no one else here appears to have any recommendations, you might try posting about this to the misc@ mailing list. Instead of a handful of people reading about your problem, you will have thousands. Be sure to include both your dmesg and a copy of /var/log/Xorg.0.log, which will provide information regarding your X Windows configuration.
