[solved] Help with thesis. Please vote for your firewall!
Hello!
This year I'm writing bachelors thesis about OpenSource firewalls. I'd like to ask all of you, who use OpenSource firewalls to vote: http://poll.bsdroot.lv/ You will need to enter your email address, and will receive confirmation email (possibly in spam). This is to prevent some spam, and one person voting multiple times (ok, it won't prevent that one, but at least it can reduce numbers) Email addresses will not be used to contact you. They will not be given away, and as soon as I finish collecting stats (in about month) I will delete them. Please vote only once. P.S. I will publish stats in about month on http://wiki.bsdroot.lv, and update this thread. Last edited by graudeejs; 11th May 2011 at 10:45 PM. |

Yeah, requiring an email address is not a valid way to prevent spam.. and only makes it less likely that someone will vote.
Count me out. |

If I were You I would compare these:
-- pf (OpenBSD/FreeBSD/DragonflyBSD) -- ipfw (FreeBSD/DragonflyBSD) -- ipfilter (OpenSolaris) -- iptables (linux) -- npf (NetBSD) (maybe also add this one)

@killasmurf86
You can always ask for help at NetBSD's mailing lists. IMHO it would be nice to see each rule 'compared' in every FW, bor example, blocking port 1234 from any IP looks like that in ... ipfw: a / pf: b / ipfiler: c

Poll is closed now, results are here:

Some of the headings above the charts don't quite make sense.
You should post the *exact* question you put on the poll. Subtle differences in how a question is asked may influence results greatly.

How many firewalls users have tried? -> simply sum of checkboxes from question:
Which firewalls have you tried? and last chart is simply sum by columns for same question, I think it makes perfect sense. EDIT: Possibly I expressed myself poorly in this answer. (Sorry) EDIT: Edited results page and added some explanation Last edited by graudeejs; 11th May 2011 at 08:28 PM. |
