Debugging random restarts
Hi guys,
Every few days my amd64 box restarts. It’s a fairly new computer which I tried at first with 4.7, and recently upgraded to a snapshot in hopes of fixing it, but the behavior persists. Are there any logs leftover after restart that might provide a clue? Or other methods of debugging random restarts? I really don’t know where to look. I thought about /var/log/messages, but… I thought it might be an overheating issue so I ran apmd/apm -C, and here’s the corresponding portion, which seems to indicate /var/log/messages is a no‐go: Code:

For newer systems, running without ACPI is often problematic, fortunately there does appear to be BIOS updates available for that motherboard.
You may wish to try upgrading and seeing if that helps things any. http://support.asus.com/download/dow...A785TD-V%20EVO You should work with the developers to get this fixed, use acpidump(8) to send a dump to marco@ (Marco Peereboom) and jordan@ (Jordan Hargrave), they are the primary ACPI developers. Only send the resulting binaries using -o, in the form of a tarball, apparently acpidump's AML parser was broken and removed from -CURRENT. You don't need ACPI enabled in the kernel, the following dumps the files into the current directory. $ sudo acpidump -o asus-m4a785td-v-evo The only other thing I can think of is looking around the BIOS settings, while reading through the motherboard documentation. |

It may be a longshot, but I would also suggest testing memory. Utilities just as memtest86:
http://memtest86.com/ ...are free, so all you will be out is the time spent setting everything up & actually testing. I would recommend testing for a continuous 24-hour period minimum. |

Great idea ocicat,
Just a note, you should probably use memtest86+, the former is recently maintained again but has less support for newer systems. Also, there is a port that allows you to test your system without using a boot disk, but by loading the binary from boot> instead of the OpenBSD kernel. It even works over serial connections! http://www.memtest.org/ http://openports.se/sysutils/memtest86+ |

FWIW, booting with ACPI appears to have been fixed in a recent commit.
I have not yet had the chance to test it yet (on my todo list for the coming week…). I have been successfully running i386 with ACPI disabled on this box for three months without any restarts, so I don’t know if the restarts were an issue with running amd64 specifically with ACPI disabled.
