Default FreeBSD Will Pay For Some KMS & GEM Love

Quote:
Kris Moore of PC-BSD/FreeBSD wrote to the Intel mailing list this morning (here's the message) asking about whether the UMS Intel legacy branch will be maintained. FreeBSD/PC-BSD lacks KMS and GEM support at present, but this UMS driver allows their Intel users to run a newer DDX driver without the said requirements. However, as is the case, this branched legacy driver will not receive anymore work and Intel's OSTC X developers really don't have much interest in non-Linux platforms.

The good news, however, is that the FreeBSD Foundation is willing to finance a developer to work on bringing kernel mode-setting and Graphics Execution Manager support over to the FreeBSD kernel.

Apart from that, there is already a usable solution in OpenBSD current (4.8?) and DragonFlyBSD is working on something similar.

What this means is that I was right, when I bought AMD server and not Intel Inside server

Oh, and I will probably keep with AMD for some time now (since Intel is not interested in non-(Linux|Windows|Mac))

Intel doesn't make the drivers for Apple, just Windows and Linux. And *BSD is no business at all and it the end it's just business that counts for a company. Apart from that, enjoy AMD as long as possible, because if there is no GEM/KMS in the near future, your ATI-driver will be doomed too.

It is especially vital for Linux drm GEM, TTM, KMS code to be ported immediately to the BSDs because developers are in the process of removing userland modesetting code from current graphics drivers. To paraphrase what we have been told by freedesktop.org developers, if we do not port this code, very shortly the BSDs will be left only using the simplest VESA driver at 1024 x 768 resolution with no hardware acceleration.
Finally it's not the problem of Intel, or some Linux-guys, it's the sole problem of the FreeBSD-community. If there is no support (maybe there is just no one able to do it), then there won't be a FreeBSD-desktop anymore. And without a desktop, FreeBSD's decline is mandatory. FreeBSD as server-OS doesn't need the desktop, but it needs the advocates of the desktop-crowd :-)
