Do you use Sun Java Plug-in or Iced Tea? NetBSD was the first one among BSDs to have Iced Tea ported. I know that FreeBSD also got it. There has been some talk about that in OpenBSD community but nothing yet. Are you saying that Java Iced Tea on NetBSD is not as good as on Linux? What about Sun's via Linux emulation or native? OpenBSD Sun version was a bit outdated on OpenBSD (plug-in) but rock solid when I needed. On the another hand I am not serious Java consumer.

Pjoter, I am a Serb. I am alway ready for a war It was just funny that you made a very strongly worded recommendation for FreeBSD over OpenBSD without
really knowing what the needs of the guy are. If it is just Kicad I am having hard time as a former FreeBSD and current OpenBSD user to see why would he choose the first one over the second. The OpenBSD port has just been updated to the very latest version and in my experience OpenBSD is much more stable than FreeBSD. But then I am a bit biased

P.S. There is that Romanian dude on this forum who uses NetBSD. Maybe he can help with Kicad port for NetBSD. I completely forgot about him.

I tried to use Iced Tea plugin and Sun via Linux emulation- it didn't work- I was even posting that to pkgsrc mailing list. Pity but I must have working Sun java plugin as the applet is made to use only Sun (openjdk is not yet compatibile with Sun Java and therefore the problems). Nevermind- this can wait.

Yes but without intention to flamewar etc. Simply FreeBSD gives a better and more support- the same for packages- this is obvious.

Let's see how it goes with port creation.

Here is an example how to create port from scratch- frankly, if you read Makefile, options.mk etc from some working port you should be able to understand how to create a port.

http://www.netbsd.org/docs/pkgsrc/cr...l#creating.nvu

Please see general pkgsrc guide:

http://www.netbsd.org/docs/pkgsrc/users-guide.html

There is also pkgsrc available in pdf:

http://www.netbsd.org/docs/pkgsrc/pkgsrc.pdf

For current sources please always go here (aslo you can find packages for different pkgsrc/NetBSD version):

http://nyftp.netbsd.org/pub/

I think this is all how can I help you.

Good luck and if you succeed post your port to pkgsrc wip:

http://pkgsrc-wip.sourceforge.net/

Good luck !

Pjoter.

It means that you are blessed with some of the most beautiful women on the world. I almost married two (not at the same time of course) of them before settling down for a Russian girl It seems now that happened five lifetimes ago but it was only 15 years ago.

P.S. The Sun Java plug-in is rock stable on OpenBSD but then that lack of support must be a killer deal

Women are beautiful

Are you able to test on OpenBSD that:

https://fx2.oanda.com/cgi-bin/java/test.pl

And maybe the demo account:

https://fxtrade.oanda.com/login

User: BamBam1234
Passwd: BamBam1234

You should see applet loading and some charts etc. (the account can be locked yet).

Thanks !

Piotr.

At the moment I do not have Java installed on any machine. Let see if somebody else here have it. If not I will compile on Monday and test it for you. Is that OK?

I just checked Firfox35 and it is OK. Also a great news xalan is OK. I am building JDK-1.5 which contain plug-ins for the browser as we speak. The plug-ins are in jre-1.5 but you need to build whole JDK unfortunately. I will test thing and more over post just binaries for JRE-1.5 so that you do not have to mess with this. The only problem is that this machine is running OpenBSD 4.8 not current 4.9 release. I am waiting for 4.9 current to turn into 5.0 beta and use that one next year. There are too many packages that I need that got updated in the past month or so. So as long as you are willing to use OpenBSD 4.8 you can have this probably in a next two hours.

Wait until I build this and test. It should not take very long. It is core two duo with 3 GB of RAM (Java requires i386 as OpenBSD amd64 is honest 64 bit operating system and can NOT run i386 like FreeBSD for example).

Yes, I have They are the only thing I have on this world. The photo was taken last year down in Savannah Georgia one oldest U.S. port cities (1600 something). I have a picture of the older one when she was four months old messing up with FreeBSD.

I can also successfully log into account with the given credentials

Now this is what I was using to do so

Code:
$uname -a
OpenBSD oko.bagdala2.net 4.8 GENERIC.MP#361 i386
$ ls /var/db/pkg |grep firefox*
firefox35-3.5.11
$ ls /var/db/pkg |grep jde*
jdk-1.5.0.16p2
You do not need jdk-1.5 to have plug-ins. It is enough to have jre-1.5. You can download both jdk-1.5.0.16p2 and jre-1.5.0.16p2 binaries from

http://spots.aug.edu/ppunosev/jdk-1.5.0.16p2.tgz
http://spots.aug.edu/ppunosev/jre-1.5.0.16p2.tgz

One more time. You just need jre-1.5.0.16p2.tgz, firefox35 (make sure it is not 36) and do a soft link

Code:
ln -s /usr/local/jdk-1.5.0/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so ~/mozilla/plugins
Do not verbose copy unless you installed JDK

Oh... I forgot to say. Your audio card is fully supported by OpenBSD 4.8 and above

Hi Oko,

thanks- great news.

The UA25 is supported but only with limited usability- ie I cannot record or play with 96/24 mode- so the card is offering limited quality.

But thanks for everything- I will think about OpenBSD

Piotr.
