Hello,

That's quite debatable. Their is a lot of controversy over their licensing and who actually owns the patents, etc. (remind you of another thread on this board). I think I heard where they (whoever thinks they own it) were or are thinking of going after users now to collect licensing fees. And many Linux distros don't even provide mp3 support anymore for fear of being sued - you have to get them from third parties in an almost cyber-black market. I also think that it mp3 an inferior format to ogg, but that my be a bit subjective.

APNG and MNG are 2 potential replacements for GIF, but they're not interactive.. SVG as mentioned above is decent.

So is Flash used a a wrapper to easily make java applets without the need to learn java? If so then is there some Open Source utility that would do the same?

Ah, you mean you want a flash/actionscript interpreter?
There's gnash and libswf ... Neither work very well for me...

What I'm thinking is that people program games and such in Flash because it's "easier" than programming in Java. Therefore, to put a dent in Flash there would need to be sometype of Open Source alternative that would allow a web developer to accomplish the same types of applets with the same leve of "simplicity".
If something like this exists, I'm unaware of it and this seems to me like a good project to attempt. I don't think I have the time for something this invovled but it would be interesting.

I like SVG tetris, It's a perfect example of a "free" alternative to flash, you can actually view the source of the game as well, it's a text format.

Ironically it's available in the form of a plugin from Adobe.

Yes, I forgot about that. The problem, though, is IE users need to install the plugin and I don't recall if they have to go to the Adobe site to do that or what needs to be done. In any case, SVG is natively supported in all other browsers.

Just a slighly SVG related update..
Places using SVG to provide interactive content: Google Maps (Entirely in SVG, Minus the Street View function which is Flash..) WikiMapia (Uses Google Maps API..) Microsoft Live Maps (I was equally surprised by this fact..). I'm sure there are other examples of SVG's use, just again, proving flash isn't necessary in this world. |

All I program is Flash/Flex/Action Script 3.0 when I'm not programming Objective-C. I like C, but I still have to get it second nature. Change is the only constant a programmer understands. If you don't anticipate and adapt to change, you're not really a programmer, but I spot on the wall.

I disagree entirely, I'm well versed in the ways of a good "temper tantrum".
