Dell Inspiron 1525 - OpenBSD
Hi, I recently taken ownership of a old Dell Inspiron 1525, that I've put in a Core2Duo and some extra ram. I would like to run OpenBSD on it however i'm unaware of compatibilty.
As far as I can tell, sound and video will work just fine. However the B43 wireless i'm unaware of whether this works? Thanks :-) |

The definitive answer is to post the output of dmesg(8) so we can look at the actually chipset used.

0b:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4315] (rev 01) There is my card, I've searched through the mailing lists and not found that it is support. |

The hardware compatibility listed on the project website is for the 4.8 release. 4.9 will be released on or about 1 May 2011.
You can test your NIC for 4.9 compatibility very simply. Download and boot a -current ramdisk kernel -- as -current at the moment is very similar to what 4.9 will be. Small .iso images for burning onto CD or DVD are available from your nearest mirror. On booting the ramdisk kernel, leave the install script and examine the dmesg output. If the NIC does not appear in the list of discovered devices, or, it appears with "not configured" -- then the device cannot be used. |

I have a very similar card in one of my work laptops. It's configured according to dmesg, but even with the latest firmware it will not connect to any AP I've tried...even though "ifconfig bwi0 scan" returns a list of nearby AP's. Granted, it's entirely possible that user error is at play here (I don't use wireless all that often, truth be told), but I don't know...I was pretty thorough in sticking to the man page and editing my AP's settings at home to see what changes were necessary to connect. Nothing worked. |

Apparently the card works with unsecured wireless, but once you apply security to it (didn't test WEP, since it's basically unsecured anyways), it's broken? Might be my specific chip...I don't know. I'll keep testing.
I did test my routine at work on a different laptop and I managed to connect to our WPA2 network up there...so I know I've got the order of operations correct, at least...though that was an iwi chipset. EDIT - disregard...apparently someone in my household thought it would be hilarious to turn on access control in the wireless settings on my AP and not put any machines in the list. Turning it back off "fixed" this bwi card on my work laptop... Last edited by rocket357; 27th March 2011 at 05:07 AM. |
